A few days ago, in the ROCKABILLY puzzle of 16 May 2018, I missed the word carboy, which was classified as common. I did not know this word, and when I looked it up, I recognized what it was, although seeing the picture still did not jog any memory of the word in my mind. Since fewer than ten percent of the players found the word, I want to know whether most people know this word and just didn't find it, or is it actually not common?

Not known to me.

I have vague memories of learning the word in school chemistry lessons many years ago.
I think demijohn is a much more common term nowadays.
At least that's what I call the 20-litre containers that we use on water cooler / dispensers.

My memory is even vaguer. I think I've come across this word, perhaps when reading about John George Haigh, but it's not common to me.
-
I only knew the word becasue one of my uncles was a pharmacist, and he decorated his shop window with large carboys containing brightly-coloured liquids. I remember puzzling over the word when I heard it as a child, and it has stuck with me.

I agree it's not really common. The word is used fairly infrequently, and mainly in specialist outlets, like websites about winemaking or brewing.
Carboy will be treated as rare in future.

How can you see how many players played a particular word?

This is so exciting - another element to keep me fascinated with this engaging puzzle!

I vaguely know the word "carboy" as a container of liquids (not even sure of that), but I agree that it is not common.
