Title: Gotta run for now! Will miss you till I get back!

Must take photos and do stories on a diverse bunch of events:

Fencing classes at a summer boys camp ... walking the Bible at a church ... and camels arriving at a historic fort for a historic 150th celebration.

Hope someone's still chatting by the time I return!

Our countrywide smoking ban started on the 1st of july...you are not allowed to smoke in public enclosed places, work, pubs etc.
Stoke-on-Trent council forgot to apply for permission to do this...so it was the only place in the country where you could still smoke in a pub....so the headline was
'Smoke-on-Trent'.

The old man went to the hospital for a checkup after his accident the week before ... found out his ribs were broken. Now, he's down for the count. Got me a bit worried.

Trying to work, and chat a bit, to take my mind off it. He's not working now, no insurance, and no paycheck till next month! OWWWWWWWW!

I'll just have to have faith things will work out. In fact, I KNOW they will. Somehow they always do. Must persevere.

The Brazilian exchange student (have I mentioned she broke her arm last week and is sporting a very fetching shocking pink plaster cast, what can her parents be thinking about our nurturing capabilities?) we have living with us this year recognises the word. And an Indian friend from Goa which is a former Portuguese colony on the eastern seaboard of India, also uses it. My mum always talksed about brinjals - no idea where she got this from, it's not a common Kiwi word. But then this was not a commonly found Kiwi veg, and mum grew them in the back garden to ensure an adequate supply.

A friend of my daughter's misspelt the word 'heppes" in an email sometime back in the 90s when he said : "you should go out with Luke, Caroline" (they were all 11 years old) - "he's got heppes of money" and it's become a bit of a family joke - the pronunciation being hep-pease.

Yeah, right!! Coffee in styrofoam cups at the door and long institutional tables set up in a rectangle with hard thin-cushioned chairs lining each wall. One enterprising man (one of the county commissioners) and his brother was actually making breakfast tacos outside the door to the building, and giving them away FREE! So naturally, I did grab one, as I was starving and they were fresh-made with a bit of salsa. Served on a plastic plate and a great big paper napkin. The meeting ?? Nearly put me out. If I hadn't had to take notes, I would've fallen asleep in 15 minutes.

But those folk were hippies, not heppes, and any less-than-flattering Australian will be delighted to describe to you how Kiwis prounounce hippy - to rhyme with puppy. Our neighbours across the ditch frequently make merry about the Kiwis' favourite meal: fush and chups :-H

Glad you smiled. We Kiwis tend to have a bit of an inferiority complex when comparing ourselves to Aussies. Largely because Oz is just so much larger! We're a small country geographically with a population of just over 4 million. Australia is huge! Bigger even than the US. But even with its much smaller than the US population, Oz still has about fivefold more folk than NZ. Of course at least half a million of those are Kiwis 8)

I think a lot of the joshing tends to be a bit one-sided, many Australians simply regard New Zealand as an extension of their coutry and so have a fond almost paternalistic view of Kiwis. So not that competitive.

Kiwis on the other hand have a compulsion to compete on an equal footing. And this feeling of inadequacy/competitive spirit colours much of our relationship with Australia and our obsession with sporting endeavours. You may already know that New Zealand's land mass is mostly divided into two islands, imaginatively called North Island and South Island. Well, we often refer to Australia as "West Island." But never in the presence of an Australian (you didn't read this did you GAGL? or Viz?)

I know Tasmanians sometimes refer to the Australian mainland as the North Island. (Threeb, Tasmania is an island representing about 1% of Australia's land mass.)

I think you're right about the Australian attitude towards New Zealanders, bobbi. Quite a few entertainers and others who achieve great things in Australia have come from New Zealand, but the fact is often ignored over here. (For example, one of "our" greatest jazz musicians, Mike Nock, is from NZ.) The only time a celebrity's NZ origins are likely to be played up is if they get into trouble of some kind.

I think Britain can be a bit the same way towards people from either Australia or New Zealand. One year I was in Britain during the Edinburgh Festival, and the papers had glowing reviews of some Australian comedians, but didn't tend to mention that they were Australians. But I'm sure if one of them had got involved in a drunken brawl, they would have been an "Australian comedian".

Hey, what do you guys do when watching games? Are there rituals, mascots, costumes??? Over here, they go crazy for football (not what you call soccer), especially. In baseball, the players and fans both have all kinds of little superstitions and things they do (like wearing the same shirt each time) to keep their spirits high and avoid jinxing the outcome.

Football is responsible for an awful lot of trouble here, as is internationally known. If there is a footballing riot or disaster somewhere it's our 'supporters' who are in the middle of it, unfortunately. They are a national disgrace.

No longer is a football match a place to take your family to support your local team. Apart from the fact that the tickets cost a fortune, making it prohibitive for vast ammounts of people, you wouldn't want your kids to get mixed up in the trouble that inevitably ensues every match.

A dreadful shame.

What's happening though, is that in certain kinds of competitions (like Little League or school sports or beauty contests), parents are getting so obsessed with it that they attack coaches, other parents, and even the kids sometimes. That's our disgrace too. These parents are completely out of control, and set a horrible example!!

What is particularly scary about the football thugs, is that they go armed with crowbars, knives, screwdrivers etc.
They are organised groups and travel match to match doing nothing but causing fights and attacking people. It really has absolutely nothing to do with football at all. They use it as an excuse.

In some towns, the streets close to the football stadiums, are cordoned off. The houses have to have their windows boarded up. The shops are all closed and shuttered. The riot police are always out.
It is horrifying...

People rioted back hundreds and thousands of years ago ... they had wars and thousands died in the most horrid battles ... but I guess it's because it's today and we're here it seems so much worse. But, it sure has revved up since I was growing up!

Must be cyclical -- periods of unheaval vs. more placid and controlled behavior -- Lord, I hope it gets better before it gets worse, or God help us all, and our children!!

Years ago i would get home from work, and when telling my husband of my day, i would occasionally mention that i had had to serve a really nasty customer.

10 years later i would find myself saying that i had served a really nice customer.

The nasty ones were becoming the norm.

When out driving now, if another driver does something really stupid or dangerous, they don't put their hands up and say sorry, they stick 2 fingers up and scream abuse at you, whether they have kids in the car or not.

I think it boils down to selfishness most of the time.

Everyday people doing heroic things -- I see it in the neighborhood. Toiling to take care of loved ones, and of others. People who sacrifice themselves for the sake of their fellow human beings. They don't get the glory (nor do they seek it), but they're out there. Without the cameras, the bloggers, the fans. We need to teach the little ones about them. I write about some of them and they always make me feel very humble, indeed.

There is so much wildlife in the garden it's lovely....there was a family of hedgehogs munching slugs and the like the other night....foxes visit and have a rummage, as do the occasional badger....loads of different birds...it's lovely just to watch, not that i get to do much of that....i see a weed, and that is that for the next couple of hours....

This is a secular society (not a majority of Christians or any ather religion), and the Haka is probably the biggest unifying spiritual factor.) We don't tend to pray a lot, but the Haka is still condidered a key foundation in Maoru cultore.

So here's another sociological treatise on New Zeand culture which largely revolves around rugby. THE national sports team is called the ALL-BLACKS. They play a particular kind of rugby ('football 'cept you can hold the ball in your hands, so it's not 'foot'ball',) called IRB or International Rugby League. This is distinguished from a whole horde of other rugby competititions called a whole heap of stuff. The most important in Australia is Aussie rules rugby [ T: you like this game the most; trust me: they play in little tiny cut off short shorts that are uber-sexy!!! Who cares about the rules or who is winning?

But back to the ABs or the All-Blacks national New Zealand Rugby team. This is the epitome of nationalistic pride. THE side that represents New Zealand sport. Prior to every major match the ABs perform a stylised ritual known as the "Haka," This is a chant with accompanying movemwnts that's hell-bent on scaring the bejeezuz out of the opposing team. Basically it's a traditional war-cry. And the ABs do this with huge panache, and style (and I use both monikers to emphasise the encompassyng significance of this chant.)

So the ABs are hot contenders for the title at the Rugby World Cup to be held in France in September 2008.

But believe it or not, some of us even fly on a real airplane from time to time and get out of the state! In my area, we have a host of Houstonians who own their own planes and have private airports in their back yards.

I have met and photographed our very own astronaut Eugene Cernan, who owns a ranch here, by the way, and he's been "out of this world"!

It's the shop assistants and check-out chicks who rattle it off automatically that irritate me. They are obviously told what to say to customers. I've noticed that this week, in my local supermarket, the phrase has been replaced by "Enjoy the rest of your day" That's lovely, when said with a smile, but meaningless when offered with a blank expression and your receipt!

They barely greet you, check you through, dump the change in your hand, with the receipt and a brief thank you, and then the next shopping cart bumps you in the rear before you've had a chance to stick it in your pocket or purse. People are in such a rush these days, even in small towns. The competition for a spot in parking lots is downright dangerous sometimes!

I have noticed though, in several of the groceries, that there has been a bit of a reversal. There are three big stores here, and I know that they have received complaints from customers of late -- I being one of them. Customer service is more important than price or neatly-arranged produce.

At our local supermarket the idea is that you block the aisles with trolleys of goods to be unpacked and stand around chatting as you unpack. Pity the poor customer who actually wants to get something off the shelf! It is just so much easier to get the work done without those pesky customers around!

I think that people here got bored with saying or hearing the same thing day after day and wanted to mix it up a little. Plus, in Iowa there are probably more people who really mean it when they say "Have a nice day!" than there are here.

The thing is, if clerks tell me to "Have a nice day!", then I usually say "Thank you! You too!" And I say it with sincerity. I'd like to think that it brightens their day to know that someone is actually paying attention to what they say.

Similarly, when we go to restaurants, my dad makes a point to remember the server's name. At the end of the meal, he genuinely thanks them for their service, and lets them know if they have done an excellent job. On more than one occasion, he as had servers tell him that they were about to quit because of the rotten day they had had (what with all of the customers who just don't care anymore). One waitress nearly broke down in tears because it was her first night, and she was so grateful to know that someone appreciated her hard work.

Even here people don't always mean it when they say "Have a nice day!" Unless they are extremely sarcastic, I still wish them one in return!

I must say that I think the word 'Charwomen' is very outdated and is not used over here any more.

A charlady or sometimes charwoman was an English house cleaner. The term was used through the mid-20th Century. Unlike a maid or housekeeper, typically live-in positions, the charlady worked for weekly wages and usually came and went on a daily basis.

You (sorry, one!) wouldn't dare refer to a cleaning lady as a charwoman ... well, how would you like it?! >:D

That should sweeten/hotten/tenderise/oil and sharpen him up a bit......

I have to tell my student this evening that she will have to join another class and I'm not looking forward to it as we get on so well and she'll be disappointed ... as am I but there you go, can't do much about it. Work is precarious to say the least .... might reach a conclusion this week ... not that bothered really as I don't let things like that worry me ... if it wasn't for the money, I would be completely unconcerned! Note to self: must get new basque, suspenders and skyscraper heels ... just in case! >:D

There are other courses I could run but not sure whether I want to ... haven't decided yet ... could get involved in Adult Literacy but would I have the patience? (probably not, but then again, I might) ... could do more proofreading perhaps but then again would that provide enough work? .... could pack it all in and become more of a lady of leisure than I am now but then would I get bored? As you can see, I'm extremely decisive!
Que sera sera .... can't get too het up about it ... I wonder where my son gets his laidback (to the extent of being horizontal) attitude from?! >:D

A few years ago I bought a book of delightfully unfortunate misprints and the like. A newspaper actually printed an article with the title "Penis Mightier than Sword". I assume they intended to print "Pen is mightier than sword", but this does touch on LL's favorite word and also the lack of the space character. It also says something about those who rely too heavily upon automated spell checkers . . .

I love being a grandma in spite of, or because of it all. Having weathered all that, I wanted nothing more than dinner and a nice sit down with feet up and glass in hand. Did that.......had a bash at today's puzzles, but got nowhere, so I think bed is the answer. I'll attack them with renewed energy tomorrow perhaps.
I see that Linda at least, is trying to obey my instructions........or so she says! I suppose you simply can't help being provocative, can you, dear? We all have our crosses to bear, don't we? :D

A few years ago I went to the U.K. on a business trip. The hotel offered a traditional English breakfast, including beans. That was not the worst of it. They had this substance they called "black pudding", which I should probably not describe.

Many of us here in the U.S. decline to eat breakfast. Considering our common heritage, that seems like a reasonable decision.

Some of us in the U.S. have made breakfast into a form of art. Please do not judge us by antecedents.

A few years later I had some English bacon for breakfast, and it set off several weeks of morning sickness (which I was destined to have anyway, but the bacon is what seemed to provide the catalyst.)

My mother used to fix tripe - it was horrid.

Luckily, I only had a slight bout of nausea during both pregnancies, but I had lots of friends who really had it a lot, so I understand a bit about that.

The English might not do breakfast quite the way that we like it, but they make great soup. Hot chocolate and Sally Lunn cakes in Bath also helped a great deal.

The traditional English breakfast included kippers. They seem to be composed mostly of bone. The waitress noticed that I had some difficulty with this. I told her not to worry, and that we in the U.S. just tend to be a little hard of herring.

As for black pudding ... yum, yum ... as long as it's good quality and has been fried so that the outside is crispy and the inside soft and moist!! >:D

It's Labour day Monday, when we celebrate the fact that a pissed-off New Zealand carpenter created/enforced the 40 hour week. We're not lazy, just balanced I tell my kids. :)

Post by: biggerbirdbrain on November 14, 2007, 10:37:10 PM: The silly thing went on till the afternoon, but I skipped off after lunch ... had too much else to do. I left the house at 8:30 a.m., and returned at 9:15 p.m.

I'd already had a full plate with four major stories, and then some bloke called in saying there was a special meeting at the fire department that evening and could I cover it ... so then, I had to make more phone calls, leave messages, write, write, write, receive more calls ... and then wait until flaming 8:00 p.m. for the fire chief to call back with the outcome of the vote .... blah, blah ... took forever, too, because the office was full, we had four people getting/making phone calls on just two phone lines! It was only the last couple of hours, when the other two finally left, that I had peace and quiet enough to actually finish the last two stories. During that, I had to pick out the photos (about 8-10) for the various pieces, plus a few extras from Veterans Day, and write all the captions for them.

It was a hoppin and a poppin the whole time, I'll tell ya! And this morning, I've got to be out at the dam dam by 9 a.m. for more photos of a diver pulling the plug for the draining of the lake! Wheeeeeeeeeee!

I yearn for the old days of journalism -- like the ones in the movies (which probably never really happened), where the ace pilot (Clark Gable) ends up with the crack reporter (me) in a single-engine plane, they crash on a desert island, fight, and then, after two nights of being apart, rush into each others' arms and spend 6 months hoping no one will find them as they romp and cavort, playing with the monkeys and eating bananas all day! Pirates arrive, kidnap her/me, and the hero must repair the plane with gum wrappers and palm leaves, rescue her/me, and they escape just in the nick of time into the golden-rayed sunset! They return to the big city, and then break the biggest story of the year!

The job I have applied for is sort of reception/admin at local secondary school ... new post and sounds quite interesting ... no prep and marking and teaching disruptive kids!! My teaching certificate might come in handy though if they ever need a stand-in!! Gone off teaching in a big way ... there are so many bad teachers these days ... so many disinterested and disenchanted kids, too! Oh, to be an intrepid journalist!! >:D

Post by: biggerbirdbrain on November 14, 2007, 11:18:48 PM: Haven't had any big adventures here, although the Sheriff and I do occasionally get to visit about some of his cases, and he's shared some pretty amazing/horrid details about murder investigations and crazy felons, I'll admit. So that's not something you get to hear every day.

I've met fabulous astronauts and writers, undercover operatives, and that sort of thing, and so that's always fun. I guess it's really all the people I get to interview -- I can be nosy, and get paid for writing about it!

That's a perfect job.

Plus, we're getting ready to put my first 50 family stories into a collection this year (I think I mentioned that earlier), so that'll be a big kick, too. I might even get to sign a few autographs!

New movies: Juno (good), Charlie Wilson's War (good), National Treasure (awful), The Great Debaters (excellent - probably the best she's seen in several years, according to the person I saw it with - and she sees a lot of movies), and Atonement (I think good, but I'm still thinking about it).

Older movies: The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Under a Tuscan Sun, The Painted Veil.

I suspect this is more movies than I've seen the rest of the year combined.

And I did get a few things done - addressed most of the envelopes for the Groundhog's Day cards. Now I just have to sit down, write the form letter, get it copied and write all the personal additions for about 80 cards. To think I used to do all that and work too!
