A common enough word (don't know its status in Chi) is riverbank. Of course, I found it in the OED.
..... So why the heck isn't there a word creekbank? (Not in OED, so I dare not suggest it be added!)
???

Ha! I tried creekbank too!

Great minds think alike! :P

Totally unrelated but I can't be bothered to start a new thread, what on earth is a sandlot? A lot of sand? A parking lot covered in sand? The mind boggles! We don't have such a word here ... I am assuming it is an Americanism!
-
... and is luau really a common word?? Not to me!
-
Maybe we have one out in Morecambe Bay Linda!!!
-
Maybe the cockle pickers have their own version, after all Morecambe Bay is almost as exotic as Hawaii!! >:D

According to the dictionary that comes with Chi, it's "a vacant lot where children play". Who brings the sand?

I assumed Linda's question was rhetorical. She knows she can click on a word for its definition ... or even use a search engine to learn about a word .... right, Linda? .... right?? >:D
I think of a sandlot as a place in a subdivision which has not yet had any construction — where there isn't any real grass, just a bunch of weeds and typically used by kids in the area for playing (unorganised) sports, especially baseball and baseball-type games (softball, stickball, 500, etc.). The field isn't necessarily sandy unless the normal 'soil' of the area is sandy. I would guess the name might derive from having an empty lot used by the subdivision developer (who typically owns the land until it is sold to a new home buyer) as a place to store building materials, including sand (for concrete) for construction being done at nearby lots.

Thanks for that comprehensive explanation of sandlot, TRex! Blimey, it didn't occur to me to use a search engine or click on the word to discover its definition!! Silly me, eh?! >:D

There is a thing called Google we have now which we can use to look up words and other things. Also dictionary.com. And onelook.com. And of course the various websites of the private dictionaries.

Really?!! How new and exciting it all sounds! I must investigate at the earliest possible opportunity. >:D
