Title: Annoyances
Post by: mkenuk on July 09, 2014, 08:42:21 PM
Do any of these things happen to others or is it just to me?

1) click 'shuffle' to put some or all of the letters on the display; press 'shuffle' again to jumble them up and, hey presto! there are gaps in the display; one or more of the letters is /are not visible.

2) enter the first two letters of a word you want to play, and before you have time to type the next two letters receive one of the following messages 'word must contain at least four letters' or 'word must contain the 'D'

3) while using the shuffle facility get the 'sorry, SQXKJKLUB' not known' message even though you haven't clicked 'enter'

I've tried the usual remedies: I've sworn vehemently at my computer and promised it a damned good thrashing if it does it again, but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Oh, seems to happen more when using the full screen.

 >:( :'(

I think that the one that bothers me most is when I have read a forum post and then go back to play but I can't type in the letters for a word. The first word I input has to be done using the mouse bar on my laptop. After one word it is fine to type letters and press enter. I am almost certain this was not the case when I first became a player but I have a rubbish memory so maybe not!!!

Mike, I find that the tiles go to the display but the letters aren't showing on them. It also happens if you type fast. I experience the other problems you mention when I play on the iPad but not the PC. As I've said before, if you're one of the players whose hit rate is of concern, don't play on an iPad!

Cmh, I think the problem you describe is because you've gone to another screen, so the game screen has lost the focus. Not sure what you mean by the mouse bar, but all I do is click anywhere onto the screen to bring the focus back to the game and then type my words in as normal.

Having just read your reply Pat I tried clicking on screen and yes it did allow me to type in the letters. Thank you. A computer has a mouse but a laptop has the pad with a clicker below. To me that is a mouse bar but I don't suppose it is an official name! I have no real computer skills - I just mess about and hope for the best!!

I managed to solve all the problems I mentioned in my original post - I bought a new mouse! Everything is now tickety-boo again!

Obviously not the solution for those with mouseless devices - smartphones, tablets, phablets and whatever, but fine for the good old-fashioned desktop.

Just why a faulty mouse should cause these problems is beyond me, however.

CMH - The Chi window has lost focus, but you don't have to use the inadequate mouse to change focus back to Chi.  I really can't blame you; I do not like the mouse substitutes they put into laptops.

Try using the <Alt><tab> to select which window has focus.

thank you a non amos but that was way above my head!!!!!  I have no idea what focus is in this context. Clicking "somewhere" on the screen has done the trick with my annoyance but I do  agree that laptops whilst handy are not as easy to use for those of us that struggle with both computer "logic" and in my case also with dexterity ( early arthritis!) I do appreciate the kind suggestions and help that the forum users so freely offer.

Has anyone else found that the letters, especially on the Challenge and Standard puzzles, are very slow to respond?  I type away and the letters can't keep up with me.  Wonder if it's perhaps just my computer but this has only happened recently and has not been a problem before.  Also, I am finding that I am frequently clicking on a tab or a forum post and am taken to a very annoying advert page or a Chi visitor survey type thing!  Anyone else having these problems?

I have had the problem of letters being slow. It happens a fair amount, especially on my older laptop. My assumption is that there is some program or programs running in the background (such as my antivirus program) that are eating up computing resources. My laptop has only the bare minimum of memory and disk space available, and my browser (Chrome) is an incredible resource hog. Plus I experience the slowness when both RF and I are on our respective computers at the same time. I sometimes suspect my wireless connection of being less than stellar.

I have not experienced the other problem you describe. Perhaps your computer has been invaded by some sort of malware?

Yikes!  I hope not, RM.  My antivirus is up to date and tells me all is well and computer (which is far from old) went in for a health check fairly recently so hope it's ok.

Maybe not real bad malware, but some kind of adware that inserted itself where it wasn't wanted.

It certainly sounds like there's something wrong, Linda, if you're getting taken to ads or surveys from this site. The Chihuahua and forum sites have never carried any advertising (apart from the occasional tasteful notice about a new Chi book) or any visitor surveys (apart from the occasional survey created by a forumite, like T's survey about whether people wear pants or pant).

Has anyone else been having similar problems?

I remember a short period probably five or more years ago, when the Forum was "attacked" by person(s) who joined Chihuahua most likely for the express purpose of posting extremely distasteful advertisements for whatever ugly product they were pushing.

This was at a time when there were fewer safeguards regarding those who could join Chihuahua.

Alan quickly dealt with this very annoying hijacking of the Forum by strenthening the procedure by which people can join Chihuahua.  Since that time, there have, happily, been NO recurrences of hijacking of the Forum.

Also, I am finding that I am frequently clicking on a tab or a forum post and am taken to a very annoying advert page or a Chi visitor survey type thing!  Anyone else having these problems?

I have had similar problems in the past, not with Chi, but with other websites. Some of these things can slip through the net of even the best anti-virus programs.
I'm by no means a computer expert, but I've found that best way to get rid of such things is to do a system restore. - On Windows 7 it's very easy to do, it takes about five minutes.

If that doesn't work, it's probably time to call in the experts.

Hmmm .... I will do a system restore and see if that improves matters.  In the meantime, I will keep an eye on things and will report anything unChilike!!  Thanks.

I also have problems with the letters being slow to respond (or not responding), or entering themselves in the wrong order. I'm clicking letters in one-fingered, on a tablet, so I know it's not just one finger working faster than another during normal typing. I may type in three letters before anything appears and then they appear randomly.

Does anyone know why sometimes I'm able to adjust the order of the letters after they've been played but at other times I'm not able to make them budge and so have to clear and retype?

I didn't know you could change the order of letters!

Thanks for pointing that out, Anona.

I have just clicked on to the 9 a m letters game and was immediately directed to:

What's going on?

Sorry to say it, Linda, but I think the problem is with your computer. Somehow a virus must have crept in. Even the best virus checkers don't catch them all.

As Rogue Mother has pointed out, you've obviously picked up a piece of adware / malware / spyware etc.

Normally a 'system restore' (or 'recovery' as they're now calling it on Windows) by setting your operating system back to a time before this thing latched on to you, will clear up the problem without affecting photos, documents ets stored on your hard-drive.

If you've tried that and it hasn't worked, then other than a full virus scan there's not much I can suggest.

Good luck!

It would seem to be a problem on Linda's computer if she is the only one experiencing this issue, but it seems odd that it happened while she was already on the Chihuahua page and just clicking on another tab. A very sneaky intruder!
Title: Re: Annoyances

Linda: As RM says, very sneaky! It seems like something is hijacking your mouse click before the Chi script gets a chance to handle it.

I can't see signs of anything untoward on the Chi web server, so it does seem that the problem is likely to be on your computer. Have bad things been happening on any other sites, Linda?

anona: Unfortunately some things don't work so well on tablets and other touch screens. I didn't even know you could play using the virtual keyboard on an iPad until people mentioned it in this thread (https://theforum.lexigame.com/index.php/topic,2904.0.html) a few months ago. I made some changes to how that works, but it didn't seem to function at all in any of the Android browsers I tried. From what you say about typing in letters, it sounds like you're using the virtual keyboard to play, anona. What kind of tablet and browser are you using?

I've noticed in some browsers that the ability to drag letters is affected by zooming in on the page. This could be a bit of a catch 22 situation: if you're zoomed in enough to put your finger on a particular letter, the letter won't allow you to drag it anywhere.

blackrockrose: There are probably quite a few things that lots of players don't know about. This one - the ability to move letters around on the rack - isn't mentioned at all on the Help pages as far as I can see, but even if it was, most people don't look at Help screens unless they're having problems. I've been thinking for a while I should post an article "Ten things you probably didn't know you can do in Chihuahua."

Was just going to post a thank you for all your suggestions and clicked on post reply and got this:

http://consumer-response.info/unitedkingdom/121213.php?&c1=RAPUK1&c2=&t202kw=lexigame.com

I am going to try and get an expert in to sort this out!  Is the Lexigame survey a genuine thing?  Feel I have been well and truly invaded!
Title: Re: Annoyances
Post by: Alan W on August 26, 2014, 08:27:52 PM
No! This "survey" is absolutely nothing to do with me or the Lexigame website.

It seems to be connected with a spyware/adware scam called Nowlucky. You can find lots of complaints about it online. From what I understand, it's got itself installed as a browser plug-in, and just uses the name of any site you happen to visit. Maybe it cunningly identifies a site that you visit often, so that you'll be more likely to complete a survey.

I hope you didn't provide any credit card or banking details, Linda, because people complain that "subscriptions" are deducted, but of course no prizes are ever received.

The Web also has many sites offering advice on how to get rid of the Nowlucky spyware. But since these seem to often involve downloading some "spyware removal" program, they could lead you into more problems. You could try scanning your computer with the built-in Windows tool, called Windows Defender in Windows 7. Or with whatever anti-virus program you have on your computer.

Many thanks, Alan.  I am on Windows 8 so will check out the possibilities of removing this unwanted invader!  No, I haven't provided any bank or credit card details and will be a bit wary of ordering anything online for a while until this is sorted out.  Thanks again.

Viruses are a real problem.  I had to call in tech help (my ever-patient and ever-helpful cousin) for another virus last week - Astromenda.  It installed itself as my search engine and brought me lots of pop-ups on any site I went to.  Even after he removed it from my main user accounts, I found it lying in wait in two other user-accounts.
