Title: Bink's the bride!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on June 06, 2007, 10:48:33 PM
See, I TOLD you. No more bridesmaid for you! I'm staring at the board, jumping around and up and down, and there you go with your trophy before my very eyes.

WELL DONE!

Now we need an ode to Binkie - but I'm afraid you might have to write it, unless there are other volunteers, since my skills are shabby. Just puff up and be bold! You deserve it. I know, tho, you're so humble, you'll just be plain funny as usual!

Cheers,
3-B

Thankyou Threeb!
What a generous soul you are.........but I fear that I am far, far too modest, self-effacing and Uriah Heep-ish to write my own ode.
Mind you, I am so thrilled with my trophy, I make you, and all my fellow forumites, the following promise.....
Today I am so gusted and gruntled, all my posts to you will be paraging , couraging, and filled with may. I shall rupt and turb you all, as I sit here, shevelled and consolate. Appoint me, please! Have lots of asters, crepancies and putes.

Your tinguished friend
Binks   ;)

Found only in the deepest jungles of New Guinea, harvested by trained lemurs, roasted over fires of rare and sacred timber, sorted by Samoan virgins, packed by Tibetan monks.  Called Coughee......tastes absolutely
disgusting.   :D

perhaps you've been having too much coughee - try making it a little weaker next time
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on June 07, 2007, 10:43:51 PM
OK, Binks, I'll fess up.

It was just a hallucination brought on by that coughee!

Actually, to tell the truth, I erased it!

I have my reasons! The explanation is too long, and it's really because I made a stupid mistake.

No, just being weird today...you're ok, I'm not so sure about me, though! Sleep deprivation, I'm sure!
Going a bit crazy? Probably.

Cheers,

Okay.

Whilst I awaited your posts and/or progress, I had been looking up the older puzzle to see what dumb words I had missed, I got captivated, distracted, and later, went off to read my e-mail.

I came back to the Chi, saw that on that previous day you had gotten the crown. In my befuddled state, I became elated at having seen your trophy from before, and mistaking it for today's game, was bestowing you with more laurels.

Thence, the comment about what kind of coffee (meaning, magic potion) were you imbibing, since it seemed to have given you greater powers.

There! Hope that makes some sense.

Like I said, I'm just going a bit koo-koo! But then again, I'm used to it.
"Some-timers" could also be a contributing factor.

Whew!

Now that I've totally humiliated my self, that's just the plain and ugly truth.

Please don't hate me for being so dumb!

Cheers,
3-B

Hey.....stop beating yourself up, Threeb! I get totally lost in these forums at times, and I also get totally confused with who's won what and when. Sleep deprivation is probable the answer, as you say. If you're dumb, I'm Gwyneth Paltrow!

Old anorexic gwyneth has nothing on you, dear!

would YOU name your child Apple?

I'm relieved, though, that at least the explanation made some sense to you. You always are the Binkie, the comfort blankie, teddy bear soother.

Thanks!  ;)

AGAIN!!! Binks, you little wise one! Yet another triple crown (quadruple, if you count BOTH stars) in the standard!

What do you eat for breakfast, woman?
Is it the wine, the porridge or the flannel jammies? Do you wear your lucky drawers every day to give you luck?

You're just naturally brilliant, that's all!

Pot, pot, this is kettle calling.....over ! Who's way up there in the Challenge then? I can just see the soles of your feet from my rung on the ladder!  As to the Standard....all I can tell you is that the last word that I found was thanks to Dean, and that's all I'm saying !
Gee, we're a mutual admiration society, aren't we?
Don't look now, but I see that T has joined us and is on her way up the scoreboard............
I've put in way too many hours again, so I'm looking   :-P  and feeling   :-Y  and I think it's time for   :-S
See you tomorrow, no doubt. I might make a last-ditch effort in the morning, but somehow I seem to lose momentum when I come back to the puzzle the next day...heaven knows why. Have a good day....and grab that trophy!

Cheers,
Binks      :D
P.S It's a combination of all three, plus the special ingredient......green socks.

Well, green seems to help her get huge scores, so I thought I'd give it a try. Mind you, mine were white.....keeping them on for several weeks has turned them a delicate puke-green, you see.
Night night!   :D

I knew it!  Crawled out of bed, grabbed a coffee, turned on the computer, and there you were......standing astride both puzzles brandishing a trophy in either hand! Congratulations, Threeb, you egghead, you. So what's your secret, then??????  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks, Binks! I learned from you (who was already astride the one puzzle) and took it just one more step  --  I wore TWO pairs of

green

drawers ! ;D

Besides, I had to redeem myself from earlier in the week when I couldn't get rosettes on dumb words I should have known! You'll get it. Today, tomorrow or soon, anyway, you whiz, you!

I'm in good company, T! Thanks!

Kermit the Frog, our beloved Muppet character, always said green was the best color! Although he added, it wasn't easy being green. (Sigh) We all have our little crosses to bear, don't we?

Thankyou, T dear, for those kind words. I spent what seemed like a large chunk of my life looking for that last word, when I could have been climbing Everest, finding a cure for cancer, or at least defrosting the fridge. Would you believe that it wasn't even one of the weird words like "neeld" or "nurdle"......no, it was "debud" !!!!!
Not doing so well today, having made the mistake of going out for the afternoon. I come back and look at the heights I have to climb, and I shudder! Ah well, Chi is about nothing if not challenge, so on with the motley!
Cheers, dears.

Two lovely rosettes for you Binks!! Cheers to you, girl! Those last (common) words on each puzzle today have just got me aggro (is that right, the usage?) I think I'll go read a good book for a while, or do something really easy -- like drink coffee and chat! Are they as common as one thinks?

I've already got a point to make with GAGL about one of them -- won't spoil it till it closes, but looks like another one of those "Common everywhere BUT the US!" things that I keep hammering because I'm stubborn!

How's your day winding down?? Hope it was a good one. You're already getting into the week -- what did you do all day besides mourn the lack of rain (which is perfectly understandable).

Thank you kindly! I think I know which common word you mean, in the Standard, that is....something that's not particularly well-known in the States. All the common words but one in the Challenge were pretty ordinary, but there's one which, although I knew it, I wouldn't have classified as common. Who knows? Other people might use it on a daily basis!
Had a great day, thankyou.....though I don't know where it went.Bits of gardening, bits of housework, lots of playing in the garden with Number One Granddaughter, and now it's 11.40 and I'm off to bed!

High marks, Binks, for the last puzzle, and on today's puzzle, you have much time to get more yet again! Hope all is well (to quote all is well) with you and yours. How's the noise?? You seem so sanguine, I don't know how! Must have a very high tolerance vs. stress. Not me -- I'd jump out of my skin and grind my teeth straight through their roots!  >:D

Ummmmm.......I haven't actually done anything! It wasn't our bathroom being renovated this time....son and DIL's upstairs, although we did have a sparkly new water saving toilet cistern installed. Everything's looking extremely new and fresh and attractive. (Just like me, you were going to say, weren't you?)

By the way, Binkie, I posted my picture at your request.  You may have missed it on account of having other things to do that day combined with the time zone difference, but I wanted to make sure you had seen it.  I did it as a one-time exhibit, opting to keep my Rogue avatar.  See "rogue_mother, say hello," no. 118.

I hadn't hear of KoL, Binks, so I took a look.  Wild, man!  It's just the sort of humor that appeals to my younger daughter, really sarcastic.  A lot of chuckles, but I'm afraid that the level of play is probably beyond me.  I'm more like the toddler who would rather play with the box than the new toy.

Binks, even though it was a bit creepy, I still kinda liked your bizarre little hand thingy! I saw a really cool ad in Wired magazine for Panasonic (I think) that had a hand with an eye in the middle, and ears at the end of each finger. Now that was a striking image, for sure!

Glad to hear your ok...even if it was just a whisper...i have whispered all day too...but not to anyone really...i think i've spoken a dozen sentences all day...mostly to tell cold-callers to piss off and leave me alone...

I meant in the wisdom department, dear! And don't forget, Yoda was an excellent swordsman who trained all the Jedi in the way of the knights! So he was a bit short and his eyes were too big for his face, but nobody's perfect!

Of course I would never say anything to demean or hurt you ... silly!

So, how are the babies? The little sprouts must be wearing you out. But at least, I hope, the weather is turning in your favor again, which should help you feel better, too, eh?
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!
Post by: Binkie on October 26, 2007, 09:40:14 AM
The children are gorgeous, naturally, but fairly exhausting ! Still, after a long hot shower, and boiling all my clothes, I can remove most of the spit, puke, poo and pureed prunes from my person!
Yes, we had wonderful rain last night, with more expected today.....I'll be trotting outside as soon as I've had a quick bash at the puzzle. Congrats on your trophy, btw, Threeb......I haven't even come close for ages. Must Try Harder.
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on October 26, 2007, 09:46:25 AM
The trophy - eh, you know ... just a little something I picked up. You've certainly had your share, but I know when you don't get to play as much, it's hard. I don't really have a life, so, plenty of time for that, compared to you. You're way better than I -- and so much better of a poet. And I bet the babies just love the snot out of you, too! (I mean that in the nicest of ways, so don't be offended.)
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!

I did mean yoghurt top...it's an affectionate term....i love to[and always] lick my yoghurt tops...don't you??

Threeb, what do you mean you don't have a life...you need to reread your last few posts... you're a yoghurt top too!!!
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!

That's something completely new on me, T. What a funny phrase! But, if you meant it as a compliment, I'll take it!
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!
Post by: Binkie on October 26, 2007, 09:58:43 AM
No offence taken, I assure you! I must say that it's very heart-warming to have such unconditional love from babies. (well, one baby and one 2-year-old) It really doesn't matter to them if you look like the back of a bus, have a voice like a bull horn or a squeaker.....they still smother you with hugs and kisses ! (That's when they're not galloping you round the room, using you as a trampoline, or laughing uproariously as they push you and you fall dramatically to the floor. You should see our bruises.....Klas and I share and share alike in the rough-housing !)
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!

Title: Re: Bink's the bride!

True enough!

Hey, where's that neck of the woods, anyway? Seems like all woods have a neck, or all places have necks! Do trees have necks?

Besides, they're very loud -- they always have a lot of bark! And they're dangerous, with their sharp needles and blades! They can travel because they have trunks!

Very witty!  My neck of the woods is almost about as far north you can go in England without stepping over the border to Scotland ... very beautiful it is, too!

Sounds wonderful ... is it near the sea?

Does living there affect your regional accents? How's your burr?

'tis not near the sea but near the lakes ... Ullswater, Windermere, Coniston Water etc ... near to the Yorkshire Dales and Moors, too.  For some reason, I have not acquired a strong local accent but then neither has my mother and my father wasn't from these parts anyway ... I have been told I have a hybrid accent!!  Hubby has the burr ... being from Bristol!  >:D

I know that if you use orange Playdough and you squish it really hard, you can make it ooze out through the spaces between your fingers and it looks like an orange octopus. My granddaughter taught me.

Squishing it through a tea-strainer is good too...you can make neat curly hair for the barbies that have had all their hair chopped off...
It's great for boiled eggs too...
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!
Post by: Binkie on November 06, 2007, 10:41:32 AM
I shall have to try that! I also learned that Playdough is quite difficult to get out of hair, and when you peel a banana you should pull the stringy bits off, and put them side by side and count them....one two three five.

Ok, there'th the one about thnow white, but I'll put my teeth back in tho I don't keep lithping! Ready? Here we go.

Long, long ago, in the winter-time, when the snowflakes were falling like little white feathers from the sky, a beautiful Queen sat beside her window, which was framed in black ebony, and stitched. As she worked, she looked sometimes at the falling snow, and so it happened that she pricked her finger with her needle, so that three drops of blood fell upon the snow. How pretty the red blood looked upon the dazzling white! The Queen said to herself as she saw it, "Ah me! If only I had a dear little child as white as the snow, as rosy as the blood, and with hair as black as the ebony window-frame."
Soon afterwards a little daughter came to her, who was white as snow, rosy as the blood, and whose hair was as black as ebony--so she was called "Little Snow-White."
But alas! When the little one came, the good Queen dies.
A year passed away, and the King took another wife. She was very beautiful, but so proud and haughty that she could not bear to be surpassed in beauty by anyone. She possessed a wonderful mirror which could answer her when she stood before it and said-

"Mirror, mirror upon the wall, Who is the fairest of all?"

The mirror answered-

"Thou, O Queen, art the fairest of all,"

and the Queen was contented, because she knew the mirror could speak nothing but the truth.

But as time passed on, Little Snow-White grew more and more beautiful, until when she was seven years old, she was as lovely as the bright day, and still more lovely than the Queen herself, so that when the lady one day asked her mirror-

"Mirror, mirror upon the wall, Who is the fairest fair of all?"

it answered-

"O Lady Queen, though fair ye be, Snow-White is fairer far to see."

Title: Re: Bink's the bride!
Post by: Binkie on November 17, 2007, 11:51:56 AM
Yes, yes and yes! Life is a little more hectic at present.....looking after the GKs  more often, which is terrific but time-consuming; thanks to more rain the weeds are rampant, thus occasioning mad dashes outside between showers; and finally, I've been having the dreaded computer-lurgies on and off. It crashes, or slows to a crawl, or loses my toolbars or just sits and sulks. Klas thinks an entire overhaul is needed. This means scrubbing EVERYTHING and re-installing, but since I haven't made copies of favourites/bookmarks, photos etc, I haven't got round to it. One day, maybe!

You can exercise your brain by watching University Challenge.
Dragons' Den is on (I have taken quite a fancy to Duncan Bannatyne for some reason).
I'm A Celeb (though I know you don't like it but it is funny watching the squabbles and bitching).
America's Next Top Model is always good for a laugh.
There are several QI progs on and anything with Stephen Fry in it is worth watching.
Have I Got News For You repeats.

I rarely go on the computer in the evening ... seems more like a day time thing.  Read a book, do a crossword, go out and have a few swift halves, knit yourself a lovely fleece for winter(!), write your Chrissy cards, do a jigsaw, press some wild flowers ... the list of fun things to do is endless!!  >:D

Metereologically speaking....ROTTEN!  Grey, drizzly and VERY windy. Most of last night's fireworks displays had to be cancelled in South East Queensland, because of gale force winds.
Apart from that, everything is glorious. I've decided that 2008 is going to be a wonderful year, if I can possibly make it so ! How about you, Threeb ?

I will tell a scary tale here about the dangers of fireworks, from first-hand experience I was too rattled last nite to relate.

As I was driving home, looking forward to a cozy evening by the fire, and the traditional Texas new years meal of black-eyed peas, ham-hocks and corn bread, and was coming up the hill just a wee bit from our house, I see a large and frightening patch of scorched earth, and several streams of fire spreading quickly!!! No fire trucks in sight, but a sheriff's deputy and precinct judge who's a neighbor standing and watching in trepidation.

Taking out my reporter's notebook and camera, I began to record the proceedings. Luckily, within minutes, the firemen arrived and began fighting the pockets, as the flames came dangerously close to several cedar brakes. My friend from a rival paper was on scene as a fireman, and I was glad to see him there, as well as several others I knew. Luckily, it was extinguished ... after nightfall, we went out again to see if things were calm, as the winds had picked up during the evening.

There were just a few bursts of local kids shooting some fireworks, but I think that the sight of several scorched acres of land, so close to becoming a major catastrophe, sobered a lot of folks in the neighborhood, thank the Lord! But I'll tell you, it was very very dramatic for me. I even scorched my own shoes, trying to stomp out a few flareups, it made me so nervous.

They were very wee bits of flame ... and yes, thanks for you concern, T, but mostly I stood back and let the fireman do their job.

Not so intrepid ... just very lucky -- and tremendously relieved!

Good moaning, mate, long time since we were online at the same time.  How the devil are you?  Still striving to be a SuperHag I trust?!
Glorious day here ... should be sitting in the sun on my day off but have loads of ironing to do and loads of transcription work to do ... really not motivated to do either ... I am a lazy little hag today!!  What you up to?  >:D

Hello Linda , my long-lost lovely haggish helpmeet. (well, you try to find another H word, then!) Are you talking to me ? Are you talking to me ? Do I sound like him yet ?

Perfect imitation, mate!!

Having a hellishly, haggish, hard working, hot and humid day ... housework (plenty of Hs there) beckoning but am doing my best to ignore it ... hot iron on the go, washing blowing gaily in the breeze, VCW's work staring at me as if to say 'I won't go away, you know, however hard you try and ignore me!'  >:D

I'm totally exhausted too, though in my case it's because I've been a horse, a bear, a baby bird, a scary monster, etc, etc. All involve crawling on the floor for some reason, and usually being jumped on from a great height. Still, a great day up intil 4p.m, when Holly was suddenly, gloriously and colourfully sick all over me, herself and Simon. (he was unfortunately sitting on my knee at the same time.) Holly understandably started to howl, then so did Simon, either in protest at being covered in vomit, or in sympathy, maybe.  Oh joy!

I used my Stanislavsky method, naturally. One searches deep within one's psyche, to fine one's essential birdness. Failing that.....flap your arms and squawk. Sorry.....this subject is probably making you feel jittery !

So L, how long have you been working in this legal office...2 months? And yet to be propositioned?

What's with British lawyers?

All the legal types I know over here are randy so and so's. You wouldn't last a week without at least one gratuitous proposition...

I'm well, roberts! Hope you are as well.

And, yes, you're right -- I AM young -- in hag years, that is.  >:D But thanks. Since most of my interviews are with 80+-year olds, it's easy to feel that way around them. Most of them are young at heart, which is also why so many live that long. God bless 'em.

Binkie, in another thread you said,
Quote
As you may have guessed, I am virtually obsessed with the human voice and its capabilities. There's Ivan Rebroff - a sort of male Yma Sumac, with another extraordinary range. I was lucky enough to see him in concert in Tasmania - breathtaking ! Let's not forget throat singing or overtone singing. One day, when I have nothing else to do, I shall sign up for a class in throat singing. That's after bobbin lace-making, glass-blowing, basket-weaving and scuba diving. Hey....stop laughing......I'm being serious here.
I'm with you, although with me there's definitely more planning than doing.

Concerning the human voice and its capabilities, I recommend an American group called Toby Twining Music. They incorporate various unusual types of singing, including throat-singing, to amazing effect.  I first heard them on a National Public Radio program called The Prairie Home Companion quite a while ago. Totally stunned, I rushed out to get their album, Shaman, and the Rogue Daughters each insisted on having her own copy (this when they were teenagers!) I just discovered that they have a more recent album out, so I will put it on my birthday wish list without delay.

If you haven't already seen the film Genghis Blues, you absolutely must! It is an inspiring documentary about a blind, black blues singer from San Francisco who taught himself throat singing in the Tuvan style and went to Tuva to compete in their national throat-singing competition.  Most excellent.

R-M, I was totally BLOWN AWAY by Genghis Blues. It was the first time I'd ever even heard of it, but this man was incredible, as was his story. Fabulous show!
Title: Re: Bink's the bride!
Post by: Binkie on September 02, 2008, 10:51:50 AM
Yes, yes, yes! I have seen "Genghis Blues". In fact, seeing that film made me realise that you don't have to be brought up a Tuvan to learn throat singing......hence my to-do list!
Thank you for introducing me to Toby Twining Music, RM. I've managed to listen to a couple of tracks online, and am ordering "Shaman" as we speak!  Whilst I was googling, I came across a reference to the group's performance of Stockhausen's "Stimmung " Do you know it ? It's very hard to describe, but it's a purely vocal piece, with 6 singers, I think, and has been called ""the first major Western composition to be based entirely on the production of vocal harmonics"  There's throat singing /overtone singing and some simply amazing vocal techniques.
