Title: It's always just one word!
Post by: Binkie on May 20, 2007, 09:27:07 AM
Isn't it infuriating when there's only one common word left to find? It doesn't seem so bad when you start, and there are dozens of them, but somehow that last, elusive word drives me mad! Has anyone else found that it's often a word that you could have SWORN you put in, because it's so obvious? I don't check the words I've entered carefully enough, I don't think.....the other day I missed "rice" . Yes, all right, you can stop laughing now. I'm telling you this because I'm stuck, yet again, with one common word to find on the Standard game......sigh      :-\

Me too, dear friend! It's dreadful. This is my one day to myself and I have devoted half of it to seeking out the last common word.
That sounds like a good name for a story. The Last Common Word.
Ah well, no regrets, just imagine the moment of pleasure when we find it (15 minutes to go), or the expletives that will pour out of us when we click 'Solution.' I am sure yours will be numerous, colorful, varied, rare and common!

At least I'm not the only one, Mancks! We shall have to drown our sorrows together.......except that it's not even 10am here.........a little early even for a seasoned imbiber like me!   :D :D

What was your nemesis, Binks? Mine was CRUDEST! of all the obvious *****####@@@@
Yes, ten is a bit early to start on the bottle. Puts a crimp in your evening drinking hours I find. Happily for me it's just after 8 p.m., dinner done, dogs flat out, I can go and drown my sorrows with a bottle of the CRUDEST white wine from the Peloponnese. It's all Greek to me anyway

I'm going off to work, truly hacked off at that ONE MORE WORD.

And Binks (pardon, MILADY B), splendid achievement!   :-R :-R Your rosettes in the standard AND challenge are commendable, as always. Maybe I can sneak back in before deadline, but I've got work deadlines, and since they pay a bit more than Chi does, I'll probably have to forego it for today.

Cheers,

Thanks all...............must say though, that the last common word I found was VERY common, so to speak. I have a feeling it's only used frequently here in Australia, but I might be wrong............

well Binkeroony,
You've scuppered me today with the illusive 'just one word'.
Is this a first i ask myself?  [i'm only talking about the challenge game here, because i don't do the standard in ernest...whoever he is???].
In fact you are Top of the list, king of the hill, THEEEE number one....etc...
WELL DONE MATE....good job.
[Please note i do not include the ignoramum in this...]
Off up the big wooden staircase now....get some ZZZZZ's in...
Goodnight one an' all....

It's a fluke, I tell you.........and since I don't know what words you got, I can't tell you what it was! Thankyou for your kindly words........but you'll notice that there's no trophy there.(Not that I'm complaining, but I spent FAR too long on the puzzle, and still couldn't get there!)

Sleep well.......sweet dreams    ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)

No fluke, kid. You DID get a trophy in the standard - AND top of the heap for both puzzles!  :-R :-R No more laments, dear!

Hi, BBB.........you are gracious as always!  I'm chuffed, I am, since the last word in the standard took me nearly all day, and was almost unbelievable when I found it. Since you, you modest shrinking violet, got them all, you may know which word I mean. (You probably got it straight off...the word meaning "One of two or three small scales at the base of the ovary in a grass flower, believed to be a rudimentary perianth." It's probably part of your everyday vocabulary, isn't it?)
Oops.........the puzzle hasn't closed yet........do you think I just gave it away ?   ;)

Ta muchly again............shall we gird our loins, roll up our sleeves, spit on our palms and prepare for today's bloodbath?

Crushed twice in one day ... oh well ... I think I'm almost over it.

Just curious ... how come "Cystidea" was not on the list ... not that I had ever heard of it ... or would ever have come up with it ... but I had to look up the word that T missed and the Farlex Dictionary had this great explanation:

Cys`tide`an    (~t?d?-an)
n. 1. (Zool.) One of the Cystidea.

Yes, how do these people suddenly shoot up the scoreboard? I usually start fairly fast, with the obvious words that sort of jump out at you, as I'm sure you all do, but then I get slower and slower until it's just an agonising, bloodied-kneed crawl upwards a word at a time!   :-\

T, you asked how many registered players there are. (You know I can't resist an opportunity to mess around with statistics.)

Currently there are 497 registered players. And they keep joining up in a steady stream - 105 people registered during May.

As a glance at the scoreboard suggests, most of the players of any given puzzle are registered. Since the registration system started in December, 60% of the players tackling daily puzzles have been registered. And two thirds of the 1.9 million words played over that period have been played by registered players.

Despite a few notable exceptions like "mum", we registered players do somewhat better - an average of 39 words found per puzzle, compared to 27 for the unregistered rabble. And a player who gets more than 50 words in a puzzle is three times more likely to be registered than not.

Speaking of numbers, Alan - I just couldn't help notice that at the time I read your message about registered players, I had exactly twice as many scores as you. That, however, will change after this post.

I never dreamed I'd ever get this high, or ever pass you, and yet, even my posts pale beside Miss-T's. (misty's? Missed-Teas?)

Interesting, your little study. Left AND right-brainer, you!

When I looked at the solution, I somehow knew digerati would be the word T couldn't come up with.

I admit it's probably a mistake having the word labeled as common - I don't know what came over me. (Although it has been around for 15 years, and is listed in most recent dictionaries.) Believe it or not, the word came up once before, in a Challenge puzzle last year, when the nine-letter word was irrigated.

Anyhow, this time around, only 6 players got digerati, probably a new all-time low record for a "common" word. Apologies to all those (including me) who missed the word. And congratulations to those few, obviously including Binkie, who did.

Finally, sweated out that LAST common word for today!

As for digerati - hah! That was easy -- NOT!!! But it's the dumb REALLY REALLY EASY one I missed yesterday I just can't believe it. Will go flay myself like some crazed albino Opus Dei monk and atone for blatant stupidity! Can't say which one because it's also in today's standard. One that, of course,  I got within the first second this morning. Ugh! Off to work.

Binks -

I'll say that the common words you didn't get in the standard, are pretty much fairly common (no Indian or Martian words on the list). Which is what you told me about the one I'm still missing in the challenge. I'm STILL STUMPED.

I'm going out and do a WORD DANCE! That's how desperate I've gotten.

Our rain finally stopped its training up and down from the Gulf of Mexico a few days ago. I've been holding my breath, trying to send it your way. I'll also try to send a few extra degrees there too, as things have started heating up into the 90s already. Summer has landed here!

Cheers,

Thanks for that, but it's actually part of what I do for a living.  One aspect of my job is to work on our intranet site.  We use mostly HTML coding for it, and don't use any programs such as Dreamweaver to help with the creation of pages.  So I'm v. familiar with this type of stuff.  Although, it is slightly different than HTML.

Poor T.   :'(  In short, it's what makes the pages, and what makes them look like they do.

And if you really want to know, which I suspect you don't but I'm going to tell you anyway so there!, HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language.  And now you understand why everybody uses the shortened version.

Sorry to confuse you, but dealing w/ techies all day, I forget that it's not always common knowledge (I suppose it is like common words...).

Hi Anonsi!   Thanks so much for the explanation.....you can tell I'm barely computer literate, can't you? I'll now try to put it into practice.   Let's see....I think I know what you mean  about highlighting so hopefully this will turn out   to be very[/size]effective!
It's disconcerting not to be able to preview the effects, though.

Hiya Binks...you actually can preview the effects.  Just by hitting the "preview" button.  (Scroll up, and you should be able to see what you've written before you post it.)

I still must be doing something wrong....last time I hit preview, all I saw was the text, with the little bracket things, etc, not the finished product!  Don't worry about me, Linda, I'm a hopeless case, and beyond all help....... :D

Binkie - if you're a hopeless case there is not much hope for the rest of us!  You with your cabinet full of trophies and rosettes!

Hope you are enjoying the Queen's birthday holiday.  We've been out to a friend's property planting trees, and carting wood.  And in Canberra we still have fireworks over this weekend, so the nights have been a little noisy!

PS You need to move up the screen to see the previews.

Thanks, Gaye.....I don't know if I'm game to try any fancy effects any more....I always end up looking like an idiot!  We've had a very quiet and peaceful day here...went for a long walk, and saw no signs of celebration at all.....mind you we don't live very close to the city....there were lots of activities planned, but we're not city or crowd-lovers!
Thanks for the tip, anyhow,

By the way, you're probably familiar with the movie "Convoy?"

Are you the Kris Kristofferson character?  ;)

Wow -- Smart, handsome, talented!

Well, then, bjs. If you can strum a few bars and have a half-decent voice, perhaps you should look into a new career in music. You know how the women love a rock star!

Besides, if Ozzy Osbourne could do it, with his mangy looks and jumbled brains, surely it can't be THAT hard! Of course, if you have an aversion to biting the heads off rats or birds, that could slow down your road to fame!  ;)

Yes i can strum a few tunes on the old guitar and i can even play a bit of Ozzy`s
shit as well. As for the singing well that i cant do not even in the shower. :-X
Im not into biting heads off rats, birds or anything YUK.
But then again i do have the mangy looks and the jumbled brain!! :-R not like Ozzy
though besides he`s doing it so well. ;) :)

I finally squeeeeeeeeeeezed out the last word before I was entirely wrung out. That dumb word was "done"! I couldn't believe I'd missed it the whole time until the bitter end, esp. since I'd already got donee, and never saw it with one "e" less.

The thing is, the forum is so chaotic these days, I have no hope of remembering who said what where. So I've started using "Show the last posts of this person" to find the message I want to respond to. (I know this isn't a problem for you, T, because you always reply to everything anybody says.)

Is there a hidden message in that post VIRAL???
Do i detect a note of sarcasm???
Are you TRYING to be funny???
Should i read between the lines???
I appreciate that if i wasn't around and replying to every post things might be easier for you...but on the negative side...think how much less you would chuckle in a day, not necessarily by my posts...but more the responses...
i will go away if you want...i wouldn't want to outstay my welcome...or constantly be the centre of attention....

Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Mancklin on June 24, 2007, 12:16:03 PM
Well, lucky I got all the common words today, because:
today for imperative reasons, I had to go to my ex's house, my half of which I sold to her back in September so that I could get the ----- out of there: she got the garden, and all the good stuff, and I got my little walk-up apartment with no garden--
anyway
I go into the back yard to help bring in the rat cage
(yes)
and she had cut down my sweet autumn clematis that had been growing up the  back stairs for about 12 years. That had not bloomed yet this year.  That covered half the back of the house. That I planted in its special spot under the stairs so it had its feet in the shade, and nurtured and watered in dry spells etc.
Didn't even tell me. Like it was nothing, which it is compared to some tragedies, but anyone who loves plants will understand.
Same thing happened to my two oak leafed hydrangeas a while ago.
So thank you Chihuahua
I'll think up a few more words and forget about all that

I know just how you must feel, Mancklin. I love my garden, and all my little propagated plants. I hover over them as if they were babies, and get quite distressed when any of them die!
I haven't had quite such a traumatic experience as yours, but I do remember, some years ago, we went on holiday and left a friend to take care of the garden. She was beaming with pride when she explained that she'd repotted a "poor pot-bound little tree" into a large tub. I hadn't the heart to tell her that it was my prized, 6 year-old Bonsai Juniper!
As you say, though, Chi is a great way to take your mind off things. Here's hoping there will be no more nasty shocks coming up.

No, Mancklin, I don't know it. I don't think I've seen any clematis at all round here....rather too hot, I imagine. Now I think about it, I haven't seen any since we left Tasmania, which has a much cooler climate than most of Queensland. Shame, really, although we can grow some spectacular tropical and subtropical plants.    (http://www.comicguide.net/images/smilies/sun2.gif)

C'est la vie, right, learning to give up the things one loves. Shouldn't get one's knickers in a twist over a plant.

Binkie I wonder if you managed to rescue your bonsai.
You're from England originally, aren't you?
I have a plan to go back there in 6 years and and grow a lot of clematis and goosegogs and such like.

In answer to the first question, Mancks, I put it back in the original Bonsai pot, whereupon it promptly died on me.
Second question, yes, I'm from Lancashire originally. Only managed 2 trips back in 30 years, but I loved it each time. My only regret is that I didn't spend more time exploring the UK before I left. I didn't know at the time that I was going to spend the rest of my life in Australia !  I haven't heard "goosegogs" for years and years......am I talking to another ex-Brit?

Yes Binkie, I'm from Ool originally (tr. Hull for the non-Brits out there). Went to Edinburgh U., then Rouen, Moscow, London, Boston, Vermont and finally New York.  :-C They all have their points but I'm coming around to the idea that home's best.
I have been back every year for the past 20 years or so to visit my Mum, but she died in March this year.

So sorry about your bonsai. I guess they are delicate little things.
Have you ever played the word bonsai?

Hey Binks, I thought the Wars of the Roses were long over--Hull, as in Hell and Halifax??? north bank of the Humber, half way up on the right? Or to give you some Lancashire bearings, about 2 hours East of Manchester,  or from Liverpool just get on the M62 and keep going until you just about drop off the end.
Attached is a rather charming railway map from 1959 (you may not have been born yet) to give you a better idea.

Mancks, I went to Southport High School for Girls. It's still there, though they've changed the name to something like Greenmount or Redfield or something!  You probably know this anyway, but Southport is about an hour's drive north of Liverpool, and south of Blackpool. Lots of long sandy beaches where the tide doesn't come in!

Binkie - I'm up early today, for once, and saw that you used to go to school in Southport ... I love Southport, so genteel ... my Dad used to live there and he used to take us back for days out - I remember a sort of Fun House that we kids loved, the Bold Hotel and a sort of coffee shop - Mattie & Tissot(?) - something like that - and I bought my wedding dress in a v. posh shop there ... so happy memories!  >:D

Isn't it a small world! Mattie and Tissot was a coffee shop, all right, and they sold wonderful handmade choccies as well. I'm not sure what the Fun House might be. Pleasureland, maybe?  Southport is still fairly genteel, or so it seemed when I went back a couple of years ago!

Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Binkie on June 25, 2007, 07:58:51 PM
Sorry....what was that about speech?

This traditional view of semantics, as a finite meaning inherent in a lexical unit that can be composed to generate meanings for larger chunks of discourse, is being fiercely debated in the emerging domain of cognitive linguistics[2] and also in the non-Fodorian camp in Philosophy of Language[3]. The challenge is motivated by

    * factors internal to language, such as the problem of resolving indexical or anaphora (e.g. this X, him, last week). In these situations "context" serves as the input, but the interpreted utterance also modifies the context, so it is also the output. Thus, the interpretation is necessarily dynamic and the meaning of sentences are viewed as context-change potentials instead of propositions.
    * factors external to language, i.e. Language is not a set of labels stuck on things, but "a toolbox, the importance of whose elements lie in the way they function rather than their attachments to things."[3] This view reflects the position of the later Wittgenstein and his famous game example, and is related to the positions of Quine, Davidson and others.

A concrete example of the latter phenomenon is semantic underspecification meanings are not complete without some elements of context. To take an example of a single word, "red", its meaning in a phrase such as red book is similar to many other usages, and can be viewed as compositional[4]. However, the colour implied in phrases such as "red wine" (very dark), and "red hair" (coppery), or "red soil", or "red skin" - are very different. Indeed, these colours by themselves would not be called "red" by native speakers. These instances are contrastive, so "red wine" is so called only in comparison with the other kind of wine (which also is not "white" for the same reasons). This view goes back to de Saussure:

Each of a set of synonyms like redouter ('to dread'), craindre ('to fear'), avoir peur ('to be afraid') has its particular value only because they stand in contrast with one another. No word has a value that can be identified independently of what else is in its vicinity.[5]

Post by: Mancklin on June 25, 2007, 09:19:05 PM
As Binkie implies, the Saussurean view is very attractive but basically unidimensional, focussing on syntagmatic relations; structuralist semioticians seek to identify elementary constituent segments within the text - its syntagms. The study of syntagmatic relations reveals the conventions or 'rules of combination' underlying the production and interpretation of texts (such as the grammar of a language). The use of one syntagmatic structure rather than another within a text influences meaning.
Paradigmatic theories on the other hand, seek to identify the various  pre-existing sets of signifiers which underlie the manifest content of texts. In so far as they successfully explain absences as well as presences they are a powerful addition to the theoretical lexicon. Indeed, a generative view might more successfully explain the absence of a smiley...

And the likes of us dissenters who disapprove of  the over indulgence and unnecessarily prolific use of the smiley, do, as a matter of fact, undertake to facilitate their use in a rather more mature and restrained manner. Quintessentially, we exhibit infinately more finesse and restrain. The smiley is nothing more than a

As horribly (http://www.clipart.co.uk/clipart/mazeguy/animal/snail.gif) as it is today, I'm afraid this will either get lost or garbled but, I'll do what I can.

Find "smiley xtra" (4.1 version) thru the Firefox browser and download it so it's in your upper toolbar.

By then, you should have started your new post box.

Then, find your smilie category, pick which smilie to use.

and then, double click on the name in the list. It will appear as a code, but after you've posted it, you should see it appear inside your post. If not, try it again.

**Hope that works for you, T! Once you're facile, maybe THEN you can get your tennis pal, Linda, to turn her opinion.

GOOD LUCK!

The last "common" word in today's challenge must be another one of those oddball Aussie ones that you down under must have gotten without even blinking! It's just making me a bit BONKERS!!

Ohhhhh! Grrrr. The creeping crud has clouded my brain, and I'm ready to just collapse from the strain! So, with apologies to the lovely Linda ....

I actually got all the common words in Challenge today ... one word was a bit of a guess and I was surprised to see that it was 'common'!  Can't get the last 2 on Standard though ... all those vowels do my head in!  See you're back to your old tricks ... you wouldn't let it lie, would you!!!  Did you ever see Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer ... surreal humour and 'you wouldn't let it lie' is one of their sayings!  >:D  Where's my little playmate, T, today, I wonder?   :(

I was wondering the same thing, Linda. Hope she hasn't succumbed to dreaded flu, or something.
Threeb, I don't know which word you're looking for, but the last one that I found was a bit odd (wonder if it was the same as Linda's?) It had a distinct American sound to it, though!
I'm off to bed, children. Be good, and don't talk to any strange men......familiar ones are ok though.
Night night all!

No, Linda, I just COULDN'T let it lie!  >:D
I'm not familiar w/Reeves or Mortimer - haven't picked up on them on BBC America, which I do watch quite often.

I think T mentioned something about going to the beach, but I don't know if it's still nasty weather in her neck of the woods. I've been wondering why, in the middle of the day, as I think it is in the UK, she has been so quiet. It's just not like her at all. I hope she didn't have a relapse.

I promise I won't speak to any STRANGE men - I'll leave that to T when she comes back.  She might be sunning herself on the beach ... think the weather has improved a little today and it's always warmer in the south of England than it is where I live ... the frozen north!!!
PS 3B - that word you're looking for ... if it's the same one that I think Binkie is referring to ... is the one I was surprised at and it does have an American sound to it!!!   >:D

Well, Linda. I just got the danged thing. It was just a matter of adding a "d" to a word I'd already gotten. Sometimes the thing is just staring you in the face -- mockingly! -- and you can't see it. It was pretty obvious once I stared back long enough.

Oh, yes, Linda ... about those strange men. Is it you who is drawn to them, or are they attracted to you???  >:D

I missed tune and tuned the other day ... could have sworn I'd included them .. perhaps some little Chi gremlin creeps in and whips the words away when you're not looking!!!  Any excuse!  >:D

Dear all,
(note, UK punctuation I think, US would be :. I am preparing for my return in six years, provided I am still avile, I mean alive.)
You people are something else. I can't even imagine getting good at the challenge game. By the time I'm all worded out on the standard game my scores are so abysmal I'd never be able to show my face in the forum if they were public.

Today was a good day--I was able to give it more time than usual because I had a day off work, and BBB must have been covering some important stories or more focussed on the challenge game or perhaps actually having a life, (gasp!) because I actually got beyond her for the first time ever I think. But Binkie. What am I ever going to do about Binkie? Love her or leave her. It's got to be the first, since the game still exerts a certain compulsion, making the second difficult.

"Uh-oh" (hey, why not make that word, since "dunno" was a word the other day [spit]) firecrackers going off around here. 4th July coming up soon.
And another thing. I'm going to buy a bloody digital piano. That'll take my mind off word games. Can carry it up the stairs myself. The movers didn't want to bring my piano so I had to leave it for the tenants of the old house. Good thing really, the neighbors would have freaked.
Ever drunk Sardinian Vermentino? It's really not bad, and only about $9.00 a bottle.

You go Binkie.

Dear Mancks,
Thanks....I think. I'm taking your comments as a compliment, but I fear they may be a little misguided. Apart from the hallowed BBB, haven't you noticed that I tend to fall at the last hurdle, only to galloped over by the great, the good, the gregarious T ?  She's the one to look out for, take my word !
Anyhoo, I think you're beating yourself up a bit too much......you did brilliantly yesterday. I have a secret advantage.....I'm a lady (guffaw) of leisure; no job to go to, no children to bring up, so I can spend as long as I like battling it out. I do tend to come and go, though....even I draw the line at spending 12 hours straight at the keyboard!

Cheers,
Binks

I may have said this before, Binks, but I've got a T-shirt with that exact image, and I love wearing it. The woman who modeled for the original WWII poster lives in our area. I'd love to meet her -- she was one of the real "Rosie the Riveter" factory workers, and a real inspiration to the power of women!
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Binkie on July 03, 2007, 03:22:19 PM
Wow! Wouldn't that be something....to meet the original Rosie. I thought the picture was appropriate, but I also happen to be a HUGE Rockwell fan. One day, when I win the lottery, my dream is to buy an original !
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on July 03, 2007, 03:32:38 PM
While I was waiting, I did Google for "Rosie the Riveter," and to my surprise, the poster you sent was actually done by J. Howard Miller, apparently for a campaign launched by Westinghouse.  The one by Norman Rockwell version bore little resemblance to it. (I'm too tired to attach it here, but it's on a website called http//www.rosietheriveter.org/painting.htm.) It shows a woman in a blue factory uniform, eating a sandwich, with an American flag in the background. In her lap is her trademark tool, the riveter.

Wikipedia offered more information thus:

The image most iconically associated with Rosie is J. Howard Miller's famous poster for Westinghouse, entitled We Can Do It! (above right), which was modeled on Michigan factory worker Geraldine Doyle in 1942.

But the woman in the painting bore no name. In fact, this picture was not meant to represent Rosie the Riveter at all. Penny Colman writes that "Since the 1970s, this poster has been mistakenly labeled Rosie the Riveter and has been reprinted on posters, magazine covers, and many other items."[1] It wasn't until several years later that the connection was made between the name "Rosie" and the image. In early 1943, Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb's song Rosie the Riveter was released.[2] Finally, Norman Rockwell used the name for his cover for the May 29, 1943 Saturday Evening Post, which depicted a different Rosie (model Mary Doyle Keefe).[3] [4] It is not clear whether Rockwell had seen the Miller poster but he admitted that "I made a mistake in the detail that people will be calling me down for. The cover shows Rosie with goggles on and a risinglass protective shield." For two mornings, Keefe was paid $5 a day for the two sittings. On May 22, 2002, Rockwell's painting of Rosie the Riveter was auctioned by Sotheby's for $4,959,500.

Post by: Binkie on July 03, 2007, 03:53:54 PM
That's really interesting ,Threeb. I always thought that the original Rosie was the one below, and that Rockwell had painted another version for the poster. There you go....you learn something everyday!

Disease??? I consider it a major accomplishment to have followed BBB's instructions correctly in order to insert them. I think they definitely add something to the discussion,  a hint of self-mockery so often lacking in US discourse, an easy access to irony that many around here could profitably use more of. Now, in my no doubt sentimental and nostalgic memories of England, taking oneself too seriously is simply not done, and so perhaps smileys are less necessary over the pond. To me, smileys are a simple and healthy method of self-deflation.
(Did I really write that? Guess I'm in need of some! here goes!)Pffft!

Well, at least I don't feel too bad about not getting the rosette in Wednesday's challenge. The one word I lacked was "arsing" -- certainly not one that would have jumped out at me since it appears to be a "chiefly British slang" variant of "ass", aand those who did get it (a select small handful) were -- surprise -- apparently Brits/Aussies.

Sometimes it feels that a preponderance of Aussie slang does slant the game a bit in that sense -- I have tried to remember them whenever possible.

And, I'm certainly NOT BITTER!  >:D

I think us lot do a lot of arsing about on the forum....what with all the smilies...
It is a fairly common word here too....

Hi Viz
It is odd..and i'm not sure why, but folk here do call people an arse if they have done something stupid or nasty, it is fairly common;
i.e.
That VIRAL, what an arse he was pulling T up over such an occasional mishap.

..ergo it follows that if folk are doing something stupid they are arsing around.

Maybe they are being lazy and not using the other common, if not longer, version of the same thing and calling them an arsehole..
Whatever..it is not very nice...
How are you Viz? You have been very quiet of late!

Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Viz on July 05, 2007, 09:35:02 PM
i don't disagree at all re arse and arsing - certainly a common & regular usage in oz as in "stop arsing around you lot" or even "stop fart arsing around" (although that means dilly dallying really, but similiar derivation)

I've been fine thanks - playing a bit, posting a bit, gnashing my teeth a lot etc

Thanks, my friends, for all those wonderful usages of the word.

I'm sure it was just as delightful/delicious/delovely for you to post all the variances and applications of a**, ar**, and ars*** as it was for me to read them FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.

Of course,   I only discussed it because the word legitimately befuzzled me, not just because I wanted to see anyone do/say anything really silly, stupid or a**inine!  ;)

All I can tell you is that one word is pretty much Brit/Aussie slang ... but the rest, for once, are not really very rare. Try the shuffle button. Keep at it - you've got more than an hour.

How ridiculous I felt this morning, looking at what I missed in COMMON words on Tuesday's puzzle!

Managed to get all the common words in the Challenge, but then, in the Standard, something just went haywire in my brain!!

Oh yeah, I got "yours", but not "ours"!!!
Got "savor/savorily", but not "savory"!!

GRRRRRRRRRRR!

Must've just gone BLIND and STUPID all at once! HOW DUMB WAS THAT! I guess all that stuff about my hubby's vehicle just wore me out. Still can't really think straight. (I'll use ANY excuse, eh?)

This was so stupid in Wednesday's puzzle: I got "gout" and "auto" in standard, and then totally left them out in the challenge!!! Duhhhhhhhhhmmmbbbb!

And then, as a crowning achievement, missed "nougat" in the standard ... another dummmmmmmb goof!

like 3B i got Nougat in the challenge and NOT in the standard - most irritating, however, i (again) blame the management for allowing puzzles that have a preponderance of similar letters - brain can't cope with remembering all the permutations. I fear i may have to resort to another letter to the editor on this topic.

PS Binkie - don't you give me all this "Bear of little brain" crap - False modesty from  someone who collects rosettes & trophies like they were going out of fashion !

As usual,Vizeletta, you are generous with praise. A tad misplaced, though, if you look back over my past results. Rosettes there may be, but trophies are a bit thin on the ground! Still, there's always tomorrow, unless I get a sudden rush of blood to the head and solve today's.   :D

Threeb, Viz -

I'm sorry you missed out on nougat in one of the puzzles. But as for Viz's complaints about similar letters in the two puzzles, I just have to weigh up her disappointment against the payment I got from the Nougat Promotion Council...

Hmmm... Sorry, Viz, but business is business.

actually, i think it's a little odd to seem to encourage new people to participate in the forum, and then to make it quite so obvious that there are 'cliques" with a "private" conversation - I'm being serious here - that's what e-mail is for - the forum , by its very nature is/ should be a more transparent vehicle.
Title: Re: It's always just one word!

You DO have a point, Viz, but I'm not sure I agree.

As Threeb says....it IS a feature of the forum, and as she pointed out to Alan in the other thread, any private messages are not meant to suggest there are "cliques".....often just slightly more personal sharing of experiences, etc. I think the messages are a good idea....saves cluttering the forum with things that aren't really of general interest!

Hi Viz [ still makes me chuckle..simple minded person that i am..]

I like my personal messages....i have had some lovely ones wishing me well on particularly difficult days......some with words of consolation, some with song lyrics that the sender thought appropriate, and others with personal thoughts and feelings about various subjects....
Most of them wouldn't have been particularly suitable for general consumption...
I know i have bared my soul on the forum several times..and have often wondered if others have found them awkward to read, or have made them feel embarrassed, or if others thought them highly inappropriate for the forum.
They are just more private...for more private issues....
I wouldn't want anybody to feel 'put out' by the fact that folk are personal messaging....so apologies Viz if that is the case for you.

Cos if you do you are sooo right....[ i am not included in that am i???] [Say No T....go on ..]

Blimey ..if me telling the whole world about my poor sorry life, and then receiving a private message of sympathy or empathy  is me being secretive and cliquey..gosh... :-[

Anyway...i certainly didn't want to tread on anyones toes..
Straight between the eyes is usually my motto...although not everyone is comfortable with that approach...another plus for the personal messages...
I am wittering now..[as Roy would have said..]

I really do sympathise with Binks as a fellow-sufferer on that one, even though I have only managed to get all of those blasted common words out a few times.  I missed gaol, which might be excusable in somebody from the US but not from an Aussie of my vintage -- and, even more embarrassingly, I grew up in a country town and used to walk past the local gaol (small but still distinguished by a very obvious sign) on my way home from high school every day.  This game can be very good in damping an over-excitable ego, can't it?  I guess it's all good for my soul :(...

it is actually bloody freezing today, Binkie.  Honestly, we have hated every winter in this place for the last 32 years, and the only reason we kept living here was the money (I had a fairly respectable bureaucratic career even though it got cut off rather prematurely) -- my wife retired from teaching last year, but I think we're here to stay even though sub-zero morning temperatures (it dropped to -2.5 at 10:30 a.m. the other day) make life in winter both expensive and very uncomfortable if you happen to be immobile.  Must say that 3.7C does sound awfully cold for Queensland, unless you happen to be living in Toowoomba or way out in the back blocks...there should be a shivering smiley!

We don't spell gaol like that much over here, it is usually jail....

I am gutted this morning  :'( ...i tried to get concert tickets to see 'Crowded House', a fantastic band as all you Aussies will undoubtably know...All sold out for my nearest venue...or i could have gone through an agency..but the price had gone from 37.50 to 200 a ticket.....
Keiser Chiefs  ... here i come...

This is getting to be a habit. I think I have some sort of mental block. Yet again....one more common word to find on the Challenge. To make matters worse.....BOTH PUZZLES WITH THE SAME MIDDLE LETTER !  What twisted mind thought that one up then?  Talk about making us work for it.........or am I the only one? No T - i do not feel put out by the fact that people are sending each other personal messages - i do it all the time - via e-mail as i think i said - What i do find annoying/ bad mannered is when people then refer to the "private" messages in a public forum - to me it's the same as if i were at a party with a whole gang of people and some people started talking in a language which was not familiar to everyone else  - it gives the impression that there is some secret which can only be shared by the initiated.

And while i think its lovely that people send you personal messages of support, it does seem that the personal messages have also been used to pass comment on other forum participants who are not playing (allegedly) in a manner of which you approve.

It has been a really stressy week for several reasons...
But i am feeling really down today...i am sure you can guess why!!!
My husband [we are not divorced yet...religion and all that jazz] has been around for the last 6 weeks...he is off to New Zealand tomorrow with his job. Working on one of the big cruise ships. We get on great now, but he does take some of the pressure off of me with the girls.
Work has been manic, as i've said, and i feel shattered.
And i miss Roy so much that today i just feel like crying the whole time.
And because i am feeling so sorry for myself everything just seems 10 times worse. I am feeling really unappreciated.
I will snap out of it..i always do...but i feel like crap at the moment.

No worries -- It happens all the time, Binks!!

I'm getting to sound like Dave -- now, it's not really ALL the words ... just the common ones have become the main quest.

I mean, if we can't find what GAGL terms common words, apparently we haven't quite done our share of reading. Although there are one or two somewhat suspect words I somehow got even today that I also will question, once the deadline passed. Common words, indeed! WHERE?? The moon??? Some underground repository of secret common words only a few are privy to??? (sorry, grammatically irresponsible ending, but used for emphasis!)  >:D >:D

I'm just venting!!

Threeb, I haven't looked at today's puzzles yet, but in relation to yesterday's Standard puzzle, I will admit that there were an unusual number of scientific terms that strain the definition of "common": actin, auric and uracil.
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on July 24, 2007, 02:47:29 PM
You're right on that for today's round, but there is one word (I won't say where) that is a shortened version of someone living an "unconventional artistic" lifestyle that seems a bit too obscure to be taken for common. (Hope I haven't given it away too much).  >:D

Aha! I know the word you're talking about, and I entered it, only to find that it meant something entirely different from what I was thinking. It was accepted though, and that's all that matters.

Many thanks, threeb -- bless you, my child, you did give too much away ;D.  I've never seen the word though, and I notice that it doesn't come up in our online dictionary.  I normally find that the ones I miss are in the realm of the bleeding obvious, and then there is weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth...

Cheers,

Title: Re: It's always just one word!

The hint came in useful for me, too, so you're forgiven, Threeb. I hadn't looked at the puzzle up to then, so there's no way of knowing whether I would have come up with the word myself, but I was spared the risk of missing it.

As for the question of how common it is, it seems it may be on the way out, at least in the fashion sense - see FOHO THE NEW BOHO (http://www.thescene.com.au/Fashion/Features/FOHO-THE-NEW-BOHO/). But I'm not rushing to put foho in the word list.

I think I first saw the word boho in descriptions of New York's East Village, but it has come to be used from time to time in Australian newspapers in things like shopping guides and restaurant reviews. Brunswick Street, just near my place, has been regarded as a boho neighbourhood for some years, but the boho scene is starting to migrate around the corner to Gertrude Street.
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on July 25, 2007, 11:17:43 AM
Thanks, Alan -- I knew you'd forgive, esp. since you were also a beneficiary of my well-placed wisdom!
Getting back to the word itself:

I grew up in NYC, Alan. Although it's been a veeery long time since I lived there -- and I DID live in the Greenwich/East Village area and frequented the old coffeehouses like Cafe Borgia, Cafe Wha and the Bitter End nightclub -- I'm not sure how many times I'd ever heard the word "boho." I mean, maybe some "New Yorker" snob writers used that word or effete elite artistes, but not the everyday person.
(Either that, or I've lost a lot more brain cells than I suspect!)

Perhaps it was some kind of Alan Ginsberg-era term ... it sounds suspiciously like something the throwbacks to the beatnik generation might have said. I came a bit later, in the height of the hippie renaissance, which, of course was huge then. Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and such all ran around there in those days. (Those were the days....) The only other thing is that it may have come more into use AFTER I left.
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Binkie on July 25, 2007, 11:43:18 AM
For some very odd reason, when I saw "boho" as a possible word, I was quite sure that it was American, and associated with the Deep South! What was I confusing it with? A cross between "hobo" and "bayou", maybe? It didn't occur to me that it was short for "bohemian".

Threeb, you are appearing on my computer with three to go, not one --  ???

I seem to have come to a grinding halt, otherwise I would try to oblige with a hint in return for your "boho" the other day (I was disgusted to discover that my wife was perfectly familiar with the word -- so much for the benefits of being a male!).  will let you know if I have any bright ideas, if you wish... although I normally need help a lot more than you do!

Cheers,

You are correct in your astute perceptions, Dave. I was mistaken -- not for the very first time, either.
I must've gotten dizzy ... Yes, I still have 3 in the standard. Boho -- that was a term AFTER my days in NYC (explained that much earlier), and in Texas -- well, we just don't say things like that except maybe somewhere in Austin or Houston. Certainly not in the sticks where I now (rather happily) reside.

One small victory, though, in the challenge--actually managed to squeeze out the common words there.

Did you like my little cartoon of Bozo the clown?? (posted nearly 4 hours ago) I thought he was rather precious myself!  ;D

Yes, I did like the cartoon -- plenty of potential application around here.  Now I need a cartoon that shows a very frustrated bloke pulling his few remaining hairs out, after missing several obvious ones yesterday and looking like doing the same again today.

Oh boy, for someone who's wearing down, you're pretty quick off the mark!
Yes, busy day today.....only had time for a quick hello this morning, and then it was off for a haircut. (actually found a hairdresser who does what I want, not whatever happens to be the "in" look of the moment!) Then exciting stuff like bathroom cleaning, washing etc. As I might have explained before, thanks to the drought, doing a load of washing also involves hooking up extension hoses and bucketing water over the garden. It's quite horrifying to see how much water a load of washing uses - even with my machine that adjusts the water level. I feel guilt about all those past years when I let it all go down the drain with nary a thought!
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on July 28, 2007, 03:12:03 PM
I must've gotten a second wind with all you guys showing up! Who knows how late I'll be up now!!

Well, I'm glad you got your hair all sorted out. It's aggravating when hairdressers do what they want to you, or just plain don't listen! Of course, the worst are the new ones who just cut what they know.

I used to find that going to a cosmetology college was sometimes the best thing. The lady who used to run one would come over and fix whatever mistakes her students made before they got too far. She's now cutting hair on her own (probably in her mid-60s), and is just fabulous. Her cuts are so cheap and she does such a good job, that my tip is nearly half the fee!

Don't worry about the water so much, Binks. Your rains will return, as ours have, and then some! We've had drought years here too, and yet now, the aquifers are at record highs for the summer months. "They" (whoever they are) say that we have enough now to last us well into next summer. Remember, "This, too, shall pass."
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Binkie on July 28, 2007, 03:25:02 PM
You're quite right, of course - the drought won't last forever. There have been droughts before, and there will be again. Trouble is, in times of rain, everyone (me included) tends to take water for granted. If it's done nothing else, the present situation has made everyone VERY aware of how much water they're using, which is no bad thing!
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on July 28, 2007, 03:31:22 PM
Very true. It is always a precious resource, so at least there are restrictions in place when needed.

Since you seem to be very environmentally savvy and caring, perhaps you know about this.
We have, of late, had much talk about selling water from one region to another in Texas ... off lakes and rivers, etc. Is there such a movement going on in Oz, as well?
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Binkie on July 28, 2007, 03:45:02 PM
There's been discussion about rerouting water from one state to another, etc, but most states are on water restrictions already, and the drought is so widespread that I don't know if that's an option. Must admit I'm not certain about other states, only Queensland. Maybe Alan, Viz , Dave or Gaye can give you more information!

Of course! You're too kind, but alas I must say, "neigh", 'tis only the subject of the story who was the dark-tressed beauty. My raven-ness comes more from the squawking I utter when looking in the mirror!

Yes, Anonsi, the first few rosettes really are something special. If you get a trophy, well ... it's a whole new level. Having only gotten a few, after hours of sweating, swearing and stewing, I can say you just want to go out and shout from the window -- I FINALLY DID IT!!, and let the neighbors wonder if you've lost your mind!

Good job!

How is your day shaping up? I'll have to leave in a while, for a very very long day, so I'll get all this out now. By this evening, won't have any energy left except to crawl into a little hole and die!

I lived in Aberdeen for 2 years, Jane, and the only thing that made up for the long, cold, dark winter, was the summer with its endless evenings ! I don't know if you know it or not, but here in Queensland, even in the middle of summer, it's dark by 7 pm. In one way, I miss those lovely long summer evenings, but when you've had a day of blazing heat, you're usually quite happy to see the sun go down!

We get a pretty even mix of seasons and sunshine vs. darkness where I live.

My parents took a trip to Alaska, and they said that the sun pretty much never set while they were there.  At 11 p.m. at night they were able to take photos as clearly as if they had taken them during the daytime!

Dave not sure if you noticed but you were my goal today. Early in the piece we were neck and neck!!!!!!! And trust me yes it is always the easy ones we miss. :)So pleased with myself if i do say so. Hi, Threeb, I've got the common words left on the challenge down to two.  One of the ones I got (by sheer luck) is a British word not previously known by this Yank and not in GAGL's recent list.  Another is chiefly British but has been in the answer list within the last couple of weeks, which I also got by chance.  I remember getting it by chance last time, too.  Seeing it the second time reminds me that my dad has also used that particular word.  Maybe in future I'll get it by design.

Oops!  Down to one.  Whacked my forehead after this one.

Congrats Macca!  I've struggled with today's Challenge.  I still have 11 more common words to go, and I see that you are only one of 3 who have gotten it yet, with only a few more hours to go.

R_M: Good luck getting your last word. :)

Macca, you should be justly proud of your wreath today, no question.  Judging by who hasn't gotten one yet, this is a particularly tough puzzle.  I have to go fix dinner soon, so chances are I may not get the last word.  Maybe it will pop out while I'm doing something else.

Hey, Binks -- and anyone else!!! Hi, there -- don't run away!!

This challenge has been tough on so-called COMMON words today. Only 3 that ever got it ... I got one to go and wanna .... you already know what!

I've been gone most of the day and will again tomorrow. Some of you have been so QUIET, what's going on? Even those NOT on holidays, cruises, or football games!! Mourning the end of summer/winter?? Drought/flood got you down in the mouth? Where's the FUN, guys?????

Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Binkie on August 26, 2007, 09:14:34 AM
Hello Threeb ! I know what you mean about quiet. Maybe there's been a global public holiday that they forgot to tell us about!  I just got the last blasted common word, and wouldn't you know, it was so common I couldn't believe I'd missed it.
Nothing new here, apart from the fact that it has finally stopped raining. We've had a really good soaking. Now I don't have to stagger around with buckets of water for a while.....I just have to go and get rid of all the weeds that have sprouted and get my dearly beloved to mow the lawn.

You're right about us not getting the word on some kind of mass exodus from the planet altogether, it seems!

I guess there's a ray of hope I might get that last word. I'll probably kick myself if I don't. Oh, well -- that's something ... better than being bored out of my skull!!

Enjoy getting your hands muddy and dirty!!! Catch you soon, I hope!!

"Blah blah blah", hey? Sounds like you've got a bad case there.

The same Chi password applies whichever computer you sign in from. If you can't sign in from work, but you can from home, I'd say you're using different passwords. If you're signing in automatically, without actually typing in a password, maybe you've forgotten what the password is. Anyhow, you can change the password to make sure you know what it is.

You can re-set the password by clicking where it says "Forgot your password? Click here", but you'll need access to your email to make the new password active. If you can't get to your email from work, you might as well wait till you get home, and then change your password there. If you're signed in, you can change the password on your profile (by pressing the "Details" button under your name), but you still need to know your current password. If that isn't what you thought it is, you'll have to sign out and then click on the "Forgot your password" link.

Confused? I hope not. Let us know how you get on.

Hi Viral,
I followed your instructions to the letter, at home.
Hopefully tomorrow when i get to work, AND WHEN I'M ON MY BREAKS, i will check out the game and see if i can play ...WHILE I'M ON MY BREAK.
Until then, thank you for your help as always...

But what i want to know is...what do you recommend for hot night flushes...[emphasise whichever bit of that phrase you like and answer accordingly..]
I await with bated breath....

T, I was just trying to say you're a princess. And I thought I could pay a tribute at the same time to the memory of Big Lou. I certainly didn't mean to upset any of his fans - I'm an admirer of his singing myself.

Actually, I blame you, T, for pestering me for advice about your hot flushes. Have a look at my photo - if I knew what to do about hot flushes, do you think I'd be going round with a face broadly similar in hue to a beetroot?

Hi VIRAL,

Here i am and it's 4.35 am.
I told you i was having sleepless nights..... so i'm sat here getting rather sloshed, hoping it may send me off into a drunken stupor.... It's not working so far. More wine please... :-R

AAAHHH!!! You think i'm a princess...How sweet.
Now think of the ribbing that will be forthcoming from Linda......

You don't look too flushed in your photo Viral...Pleasingly pinkish maybe.... Absolutely human in fact.....

And you can blame me for everything Viral, [as it seems does every else..] i really don't give a rat's arse at the moment.....

I am too peed off to care...

Get a grip, woman ... what kind of behaviour is that .... tut tut!!!   >:D

As for Alan calling you a princess .............. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ....... perhaps he meant like Princess Anne!!  >:D

Have you sobered up yet?  Are you tired now?  A mug of Horlicks and a nice, boring book would be much better for you when you can't sleep ..... but not half as delish as a glass or 5 of wine!

Why couldn't you sleep, pet?  Did you ever get round to telling us or is it too private and heart rending to reveal?  >:D

It's a long ongoing tale...that finally came to a volcanic conclusion this week.

All extremely upsetting and worrying.

I did go back to sleep though, and have just popped a couple of headache pills to help me through the next batch of interviews...
Anything likes yesterdays batch and i will surrounded by muggers, rapists, drug addicts and alkies again....
We get a select bunch....

Just woken up a little bit after fifth cup of strong, black!  I think this bloody proofreading is making me tired ... the last one I did was an absolute sod and required a lot of editing .... 6000 words down to around 3000!  However, the day is bright and sunny but a bit nippy perhaps I'll go and stand in the garden for 10 minutes to recharge batteries!

I missed pater, it was Linda that missed prat.....
But whatever....it is still bloody annoying....

A new programme started last night called 'Are you smarter than a 10 year old?'
Adult contestants had to answer questions, from the national curriculum, that our kids are taught, up to the age of 10.
School kids were on hand to help out if the adult got stuck.
1/4 of a million pounds is on offer if you get 11 questions right.
The 1st woman went home with 10,000.
It was hard.

But another example of a 'DOH!' moment....

Oops, I need my second cup of coffee!  I have heard of that program, but never watched it.  My favorite book series of all time is The Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, an autobiography about pioneer life in the Midwest, beginning about 1854 or so, written for young people.  In one of the books, where the students in her one-room school had to take an examination, the questions were quite challenging.  The highest level in the school was eighth grade, but I don't know many eighth-graders who would have been able to pass the test.  Sometimes I think that students learn less in twelve years than they used to in eight.

Rappel is when one climbs down a steep surface by means of ropes.  I missed ichor the other day, and I had no clue!  I know what it is now, sadly can't blame it on the difference between British and American English.
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: technomc on October 09, 2007, 12:56:16 AM
One of the questions for a 6 year old was;
Who was the other son of Widow Twanky in Alladin....???

Another was; What year did Samuel Pepes start writing his diary??? That was for a 10 year old i think.!!

I didn't have a clue for the former question, and was 2 years out in my guess for the latter.

I wanted Laura Ingles to be my sister, i wanted to live in that family....or the Waltons...or any family actually that had parents who were nice....Sad Cow Eh??
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Linda on October 09, 2007, 12:58:29 AM
Well no wonder I didn't know rappel ... don't do much climbing down steep surfaces ... with or without ropes ... don't like heights or depths, come to that!

Re those questions, T, I'd have had no idea at all on either!  >:D
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: technomc on October 09, 2007, 01:01:46 AM
Wishey Washey was the first...thw contestant needed the school kid to get that for her.

1660 was the second answer.
I knew he was writing it when the Great Fire of london happened in 1666....so i guessed he started a few years before.....The school kid got that right too....the contestant didn't....

It's not sad to have wanted to be part of Laura's family.  I did, too!  Even though they went through some hard times, she made it sound like such an adventure.  I always wanted to have spunk, like Laura, but I never did.

I am definitely not smarter than a British 10-year-old, if that's the sort of information they might commnly know.

Yes, that's Jeopardy.  One can get tripped up by forgetting to ask the question, but most people who make it onto the show have practiced so many times it is probably second nature.  I usually know the answers, but I wouldn't do well on the show.  My reflexes are pretty slow when it comes to pushing buttons.

The only answer I know for sure is the 6-year-old literacy question...and even then it might not be right since you guys seem to have different sayings for everything than we do here in the US.  I could venture a guess on the others, though (note that I won't so that you can't make fun of my answers.  :P)

I'm doing rather well too so far, considering I awoke at another ungodly hour! Having a lazy morning, as the afternoon will be occupied with writing, a visit with several interview subjects, and an evening meeting in the outer reaches of the county.

Squabbling between the urchins? NO! Over what? "You used my favorite blouse without asking!" ... or was it "You flirted with the boy I like!" ?

Sometimes it's just a look or stare -- or a word uttered from another room even! I KNOW! But, boys are a bit different -- they like to get more physical, but mine never really hurt each other -- too big an age difference and the older one always was careful, I must say!

They seem to go in spates of getting on really well and not bearing to be in the same room.....nothing in between..
Usually i just let them sort it out themselves.

We would have got a whack across the knuckles with the wooden spoon if we had done that....
How times have changed... Sometimes i am sorely tempted....so i go and have a ciggy in the garden..and when i get back they are ok again....

The little darlings....

WARNING: I am replying to Linda's inquiry here. For anyone wishing NOT to get any hints, there may be a spoiler or something below that could provide a clue, so if you read this, don't say I didn't tell you!!! >:D

One rather long word drove me crazy and once i got it, I thought -- well, THAT's the one that should be common, but it was a similar one that actually was the common version, according to GAGL.

I will dispute it after the deadline.

Another one merely needs "ee" at the end. Will that help?

Indeed I will .... think I might do a bit of gentle housework ... sort of flick a duster about and spray a bit of polish in the air ... file and polish my nails and might make a start on writing out my Christmas cards .... bought some lovely ones from Oxfam ... v. reasonable only 3 for 30!!  Don't believe in spending a lot on cards ... except for a few 'special' ones for special people!  Funnily enough, couldn't find any with hags on them!  >:D
Title: Re: It's always just one word!

How odd!  I have the same problem finding appropriate Groundhog's Day cards.  I have to make-do with "season's greetings" from Christmas.

I was once again down to one word in yesterday's puzzle - I can't believe I missed "decree" - and the other day I was undone by "undo."  Very frustrating!
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on November 16, 2007, 01:42:34 AM
I'm never organized enough to start this early. Boxes of cards sit there calling me, and I just think, well, I've still got weeks left ... not even Thanksgiving yet.

(I can't find any hags on cards, either!)
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: birdy on November 16, 2007, 01:45:12 AM
That's the nice thing about Groundhog's Day - it gives you a bit more than an extra month to work on cards, undistracted by shopping, wrapping and mailing, crowds, baking, and even parties, since most of them are over after the beginning of January.
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on November 16, 2007, 01:46:36 AM
You are a very clever woman, birdy! If only it would gain enough popularity that more people would demand them.

Perhaps you could start your own designs and market them online!
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Linda on November 16, 2007, 01:46:50 AM
It's always the simple words that seem to be the most difficult to find!

Am ruthlessly striking people off my Christmas card list as we speak ... people I used to work with and didn't like that much anyway and people who I haven't heard from in years ... will probably get cards from them now and feel guilty about not sending them one ... rush to send them one which will arrive some time in the new year!!  >:D
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on November 16, 2007, 01:48:17 AM
Maybe you could send them unChristmas messages like -- "I hope you get a lump of coal under the tree, like the one that passes for a heart in your chest!"

Post by: birdy on November 16, 2007, 01:50:19 AM
Threeb, would you believe that there are actually G'day cards available online?  Hallmark also makes one or two, but I want a broad selection.  One year I managed to find something online that I was able to incorporate into my l-o-n-g form letter I send out with the cards, and one year I even found a card which had a rodent-y kind of critter I told everyone was a groundhog, but generally it's been pretty slim pickings.
Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: biggerbirdbrain on November 16, 2007, 01:52:53 AM
You know, birdy -- I just had a bright idea (I think). Since you love them so much, and Linda won't object, why don't you make the groundhog your avatar!!!!!

LL - I know -- you are really a kind hag ... when not justifiably angered. I'd never do that either, but I thought it made a good saying!
Title: Re: It's always just one word!

Have just looked at my cards and realize that they have b***s on them!!  What on earth was I thinking of?!  They are pretty though, stylized doves, which are okay ... not too frightened of doves and certainly wouldn't want to eat one!  Although they might be tasty in a cauldron concoction!! >:D

well, sort of like a g'hog - but a real g'hog would probably be more interesting, especially since I don't take good pix.  Actually I like almost all animals (not too fond of sheep and bears and definitely not bugs), so I have a wide range of subjects to choose from.  How about plants?  Love them - many coexist with me in my small apartment - one nice cactus in flower right now in fact.  Anybody allergic to them?
Title: Re: It's always just one word!

Title: Re: It's always just one word!
Post by: Linda on November 16, 2007, 02:03:33 AM
Not to cacti but I do have a bit of a problem with lupins!!  They have a sort of peppery smell that brings on my hayfever!  Anyway, don't change the subject .... we want to see you not a cactus, however pretty!  >:D

but while we're on the subject of real photos, how come so many people don't use theirs?  Modesty - afraid they'll outshine the rest of us?  Fear of identity theft - how many people would steal a photo of a groundhog?  Embarassment - "do I really look that bad?"  Fear of recognition by people they know off-line - especially bosses or competitors?

Who knows, birdy?
Threeb used to have a nice photo of herself but for some reason decided to morph into a Leonardo da Vinci golden goddess!  roberts is scared of being recognised, I think ... his mummy will probably disapprove of him talking to strange women!  Embarrassment is probably the main reason ... I know I'm embarrassed every time I look at mine and it's one of the better photos I've had taken!!  >:D

yeah, embarassment would be my reason - I hope I don't really look as bad as my photos make me look.

well, I've tried twice more to send myself - at two different email addresses - the photos.  I know I've emailed photos before, so goodness knows what's going on.  I'm giving up and going off to do my volunteer work, dashing between raindrops while it's actually not pouring for a few minutes.

Hags appear in both puzzles, of course!  I would have thought that a High Priestess of Hagness would have seen that!  >:D

Teeth gritted, hit rate plummeting ... ugh, what a slog! I do understand, LL.

You know, in the beginning it was just fun getting the 9-letter word. Then, it was the %*#^(#* rosette. But, no, then it had to be the $)%($)($**(&**$$%^**&$^*&_+_#%) trophy! Why, oh why, do we torture ourselves so?

At least we're all in it together!  >:D

Reading about your pain and suffering comforts me for not being a top contender - not so much stress, since it's so unlikely that I will ever find myself near the top.  I do admit to trying for the 9-letter word, especially on days when I don't have much time to spend on the puzzle.  And there are a few individuals I work hard at surpassing.

birdy ... I don't even attempt to get the trophy .... the occasional rosette is all I ever strive for but, like today, there always seems to be just one word I can't get ... I know it's there, staring me in the face but I've given up on it now, doing a heap of ironing and ignoring the fact that I've got a load of transcription work to do.  >:D

I once - one time! got all the common words, and several times have come within range, with only one last word to go.  That's  worse than having a bunch to find - especially when the puzzle closes and the missing word (aitch, owner, iron) is revealed.  But it's so much easier to be relaxed about the whole thing when you know you don't have a snowball's chance of appearing in the top 10 - much more than my first weeks, when I really tried very hard to work out every combination of letters.

What a wimp! - no competitive spirit!  But having lots of fun.

Mostly when I miss a word or two and check the following day, I'm embarrassed at my omission. E.g. missed care and carer the other day. T quite rightly pointed out that this is unforgivable for a student of Occupational Therapy, possibly the most caring of all health care professions.

But yesterday, the common word I missed was grippe. Grippe? I don't think I've ever heard someone say grippe. Read it in dickensian type novels, but common today? I think not. We have 'flu here in Kiwiland, not grippe. So I think I'm justified in feeling smug about my almost rosette.

I know that feeling, bobbi!  That's how I get when the only word I miss is something like bint, or nous, or circs. These have been recognized for the regionalisms that they are and been demoted, but others keep cropping up.  I'm not sure about grippe.  My dad uses grippe or some other synonym, never flu.  But then, he's one who likes to use words for effect.

We used grippe quite a lot, but then, my family was not born here, so it was probably from Europe, where I believe it is more prevalent (the word, not necessarily the illness).

I don't remember anyone I know who's younger than 90 using grippe, but it's certainly a word that I'm very familiar with, so I don't think of it as uncommon.  But if we consult the under-30s, maybe they wouldn't have heard it.

My son John, after hanging over my shoulder watching me with chi, started taking over my puzzle, then signed up himself.  On Sunday he was one word short (fora).  He was peeved to say the least!  I was just bowled over by my child's brilliance at getting so close!
