Title: New Word Suggestion
Post by: anonsi on May 08, 2007, 02:04:44 AM
What about "uber"?  In the U.S., it is often used without the umlaut above the u.  It has a meaning of super/superior.

For some background on the use of uber, see the Wikipedia article.

Following closely behind I am going to suggest FUBAR.  I think it meets the accronym standards set in the rules.

Hi Dean.....funny you should suggest FUBAR.....I came across it for the first time today, and had a chortle at the supposed history behind it ! I assume we're talking about the same thing....although, for the sake of decency, my version is MUBAR....Messed Up Beyond Repair........ :D :D :D :D :D

Yeah Binkie that was what I was thinking of ... I figured I would just leave it to everyone's imagination, but I like your MUBAR version :)

Hey, guys:

FUBAR and MUBAR seem also to be amusing cousins of SNAFU, commonly used in the military ("situation normal  -- all f..... up".), which seems to appear in all kinds of sticky situations  ;D  -- and rarely seen in our little Chi universe, thank goodness.

Cheers,

I'm a bit hesitant about "uber", because it seems to be listed as a prefix rather than a word in its own right. I can see some evidence that people are starting to use it as a word - I saw a Web page where someone said, "This macro is positively uber!" But is this an emerging usage, or just an isolated ideosyncracy?

I have no hesitation, however, about "fubar". It's in a few dictionaries, including the Oxford, so it should be allowed. ("Snafu", incidentally, is already in the word list; in fact, it's classed as common. "Very common!" I hear some of you say.) I'm not sure if "mubar" was being put forward as a suggestion - it does seem to be used a little, but almost always in capitals at this stage, so I don't feel it qualifies for Chi.

No, Alan, I wasn't putting "mubar" forward as a genuine suggestion......I just thought I ought to bowdlerise a little, for the sake of the sensitive souls in the forum !   :D :D :D

T - Around here I think the funny things tend to happen once you arrive at the forum!  ;)

I guess my status on the forum should be changed from Neophyte to Voyeur   :o ... I enjoy reading what is going on, but I only weigh in from time to time.

I like the idea of the voyeur bit though!!....

Yes, Dean.......I agree with T (I'd be scared not to, these days wot with her tramping the globe in her 7 league wellies)  that we need more male voices round here. Alan doesn't count, you see. As our Great And Glorious Leader he has transcended mere gender.
Cheers,

I figured it was time to post a pic, although this wasn't really the reception I was expecting ... I would defnitely be up for the job (so to speak) although distance (and my wife) may be an issue! :'(

We are all still awaiting ... with baited breath ... a shot of you in your wellies!  :o

I am not sure how I would take this ... but I am sure Alan will take it in the spirit it was intended ... ... ... whatever that may have been  ???

For the most part today I have been voyeuring the Standard Puzzle ... I can't seem to make head nor tail of this one ... I have not been held to such a low score in a long time!  So I have just been spending my time in here ... less depressing  :D

Oh Honey,
I've been doing this since it's conception....it's amazing how those stupid words stick in your head when you play them often enough...
I'm sorry, don't feel down-hearted. :(     Keep at it you will get there.
I said the same thing to Binks, 3B, Viz, Linda and others...and they are right up there now getting trophies et all.
Your chance will come..just spend every waking hour doing this....
I'm sure your wife won't mind??? That would make interesting reading on divorce papers....'My husband neglected me for a word game....'    no-one would believe it..
Lots of girls names in that puzzle too...
Chin up...
T  ;)

I thought the Standard was pretty tough today, too, Dean. But look at all those trophies on the top of the list!    I'm off to sit in the lotus position, close my eyes and chant "I must try harder. I must try harder..."
What can you mean, T....girl's names? Not allowed, surely?  I sincerely hope you are not trying to send secret hints to the new man in your life. Shame on you....have you no pride???????

Poor Alan,
he does come in for some stick..bless his little cotton socks...
and he tries [and succeeds] to pander to all our girlie whims...bending over backwards to accomodate all our wants and needs, trying to satisfy us at every turn....pandering to our requests...constantly improving everything to our requirements....[sorry..my frustration is rearing it's ugly head again..]
It's a trait more men should follow....think what a happy bunch us girls would be if all men were like his emminenceness....
We love you Alan...

Ahoy the Binks.
No..is the answer to your question....absolutely none of either whatsoever....i've had kids...it's hard to have any pride or shame left when you've had 14 students taking turns to see how dilated you are and how the piles are receding???
And we have our conspiracy theories about the toppers.... >:(
And would i give hints??? Not i  [well only for my special men] and as they have been very thin on the ground so far this year i'll take it where i can get it  [ Goodness, that makes me sound dreadfully desperate]
Well thats me for today i think...i'm off to bed..to dream of my wonderful guardian angel...
Goodnight one and all.

Alan- I have 2 new word suggestions that didn't work in yesterday's puzzle: canoer

It just seems logical that someone who uses a canoe should be called a canoer.

If you can canoodle, are you not then a canoodler -- I'm not sure it ever came up before, but it's a cool word anyway.

Whatcha think?

Cheers,
3-B

That last word in today's standard was a real pain in the **tt! My hit rate went down to Hades trying to get it but then finally - Whew I simply couldn't let BINKS -- sweet and hard-working as she is -- get by me with a trophy, which by the way, was VERY DESERVED!

Sweet, hard-working Binkie here....(would you care to put that in writing?)  Hello, fellow trophy winner!!!! Without giving anything away.....was the last word a rather odd one?    ???

Oh, yes Binks - it WAS. One of those things I just kept adding and taking away letters around a couple of others that I already had.

And the letter is on its way to you in Oz. It's so funny to say Oz - do you have many wizards there? Are they all hiding behind curtains pulling strings? HaHa!

Cheers, dear -

What about "lurve"?  Apparently it's included in the Webster's New Millennium Dictionary of English.

Yeah, it thought it was a legit word, too, but, NOOOOOOOOO! Plus, canoer, which I mentioned earlier -- And, revulse.

Judge Alan, we await thy sentence!

I just love luv lurve the word..
It is an accepted scrabble word....so definately it should go in...especially as there is not enough to go round..and
all you need is love...it makes the world go round....there are love boats, love trains, lover boys, so gotta have your love....etc. etc. etc...so in all its shapes or forms anything to do with lurve should go in....
Alan, you can show your lurve to your forumites and open your heart and let lurve in....

A few suggestions here, all of them valid, I think.

Canoer: The more usual word is "canoist", but "canoer" is in the Oxford.

Canoodler: is in a few dictionaries, but I don't know if the letters will ever come up.

Lurve: This is in Webster's, as anonsi points out, and other dictionaries too. Since it is listed as both a noun and a verb, I suppose we should also allow "lurved" and "lurving". But what about the alternative "lerve" mentioned in Webster's? Should that be allowed too? It seems to be much less frequently used.

Revulse: As it happens, there has been some very recent discussion among language gurus about this, sparked by a statement by the CBS boss that he was "deeply revulsed" by some racist comments. The "English Doctor" labelled it a barbarism (http://asktheenglishdoctor.com/wordpress/?p=16), saying "revolted" was the proper word to use. However, Mother Tongue Annoyances (http://www.mtannoyances.com/?p=719) was not bothered, citing a couple of dictionary entries for "revulsed", and noting that "revulse" is listed in the Oxford, although described as "obsolete, rare". Well, rare words don't scare us around here, so I suppose we should allow "revulse", "revulsed" and, for completeness, "revulsing".

Have I missed any?
