Bulk change from common to rare
« on: February 29, 2016, 01:18:17 PM »
Following discussion in another thread, I have tried to collect together all the outstanding requests for common words to be reclassified as not common for the purposes of the puzzle.

A few of them were disputed by some forumites, but the vast majority of such requests seem to have attracted no opposition. I say "seem to", because sometimes it's hard to be sure. If someone argues a certain word is not really common and another person says, "It's common to me," is the second person disagreeing with the proposed change? Probably not if they give a reason why the word is common to them: "As a keen gardener, I find this word very familiar." In other cases it's not so clear.

Anyhow, these are 17 words where I felt that opinion was divided about whether the word should remain as common:

BLOWSIEST
CARTHORSE
CONFUTING
FAIN
FRACTAL
HOYDEN
HUSSAR
LAIRD
NAIAD
NECROSIS
PURDAH
RECTO
SCHOOLMARM
SEGUING
SONATINA
SOUK
SPADEWORK

The following 96 words were not disputed as far as I can see. I will change them over the next week or so. It will take a little while to make all the changes, because I want to post in each forum topic to record the outcome, as well as updating the Word List Suggestion page.

I would think that the words "recto" and "verso" should be treated similarly, either both common or both uncommon.
Carpe digitus.
(Roughly translated, this is possibly the world's oldest "pull my finger" joke)

Good point, non-A. In fact, people expressed similar doubts about reclassifying both words, so verso will be left for further consideration too.
