Word suggestion: vape
« on: December 01, 2015, 07:00:16 PM »
I tried vape (to inhale vapour) in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle but it was rejected.  It's listed in a few contemporary dictionaries (see the dictionary.com definition below) including Wiktionary.  It's a word I learnt from watching The Simpsons.  There's an episode in which Milhouse's cousin Annika is visiting from the Netherlands.  She smokes e-cigarettes and invites Bart to 'vape with me.'  I've always said The Simpsons was educational.

Anyway, I propose that vape and its various inflections be added to the Chi lexicon as uncommon words.

vape

verb (used with or without object), vaped, vaping.

1. to draw in and exhale the vapor from (an e-cigarette or similar device for marijuana).

noun

2. an e-cigarette or similar device for marijuana; a vape pen.
3. an act or period of vaping:  It took a few vapes to get used to it.

Origin of vape
1985-1990
1985-90; shortening of vapor or vaporize

Related forms

vaper, noun

Beat me to it. I think the letters appeared in a puzzle not so long ago and I intended to suggest it then but forgot.

It's all that vaping.  It ruins your short-term memory.

I thought vape should be accepted as well. Also tried it.

As it turns out, vape was named as the Oxford Dictionaries' Word of the Year for 2014, so I should think that Alan wouldn't need to do much research on this one in order to consider its addition to the Chi lexicon.

And while you're at it, how about adding Oxford Dictionary's word of the year for 2015?  ^_^

As soon as I read what the 2015 word was I wondered how long it would be before it turned up in a Chi game; I then began to try and think of a 'common' (in the Chi sense) 9 or 10 letter word that contains the 5 letters -E-M-O-J-and I. The best I've managed so far is 'juicesome' -there must be other, 'real' words with those 5 letters, but I can't think of one. Suggestions?

 :) ;) :D ;D >:(

Of course the actual "Word of the Year" is not emoji, but an emoji: the tears of joy one, which we don't seem to have available in our forum repertoire. Since it's not composed of letters it isn't eligible for Chi.

However, this is not to deny that the word emoji probably should be admitted. In fact there has been a daily puzzle, in 2012, which included the letters of the word, but the mandatory letter was not one of them, so nobody would have been prompted to suggest emoji. I'll leave it with you a while longer as an exercise, but to help you a little bit, it was a ten-letter puzzle.

Was the 10 letter word 'majorities', then?

And would the 9 lettered 'jokesmith' be considered common?

If you look at the emojis available for forum use Alan, you will however see that 'Tears of Joy' is not available....

How hard would it be to add it to the above repertoire?

As a matter of interest, is emoticon accepted in Chi?
